Dec. 8 -- In news which comes as a shock to no one, Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota has been named as one of three finalists for the Heisman Trophy.
Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper and Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon are the other two in contention.
The three will travel to New York City for the award ceremony on Dec. 13. Mariota has long been considered the favorite to win the award and if he does in fact win, he would become the first Oregon player to win in the 80-year history of the Heisman
"It is humbling to be considered for an award that I have admired for a very long time. I would like to thank my teammates and coaches as I could not have been recognized as a finalist without their help," he said in a statement.
Mariota has thrown for 3,783 yards and 38 touchdowns, with only 2 touchdowns. He also rushed for 669 and 14 touchdowns for the Ducks. Oregon will play in the college football semifinal, to be held in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and it will be televised on ESPN.
The 80th annual Heisman tropy will be presented this Saturday, Dec. 13, at 5 p.m. on ESPN.
