Hockey is back in Portland, and Friday night, the Portland Winterhawks gave fans a lot to cheer about. Scoring two or three goals is big in hockey as it is in soccer. The Winterhawks heard such cheers nine times. That is not a typo. Nine times.
The Winterhawks strongly showed they intend to repeat as Western Hockey League champions as they blasted Prince George out of Portland by a 9-2 margin at the newly renamed Moda Center (formerly the Rose Garden). By the way this is not the same Prince George who was born over the summer in England. This was an actual hockey team. If it were the baby, then I would be in awe of its two goals!
Enough of Angi's silliness!
The Winterhawks finished the first period tied with Prince George 1-1. They owned the second period as they outscored their opponent 5-0. The Hawks scored three goals in the third period and Prince George scored a late goal to provide the final tally.
The Winterhawks' goals came from Preston Kopeck (2), Nic Petan, Layne Viveiros, Chase De Leo (2), Oliver Bjorkstrand, Garrett Haar and Anton Cederholm.
Viveiros, Haar and Cederholm's goals were the first of their careers. Brendan Burke was the winner at goalie for the home team.
Prince George's two goals were scored by Klarc Wilson and Brad Morrison. The Cougars goalies were Brett Zarowny, who surrendered six goals, and Ty Edmonds, who gave up three goals.
Prior to the game, the Winterhawks raised banners to signify the Scholastic Team of the Year, U.S. Division champions, Scotty Munro Trophy winners as regular season champions, Western Conference champions, and WHL champions.
The Winterhawks take on the Seattle Thunderbirds on September 21 at 7 p.m.

nice work AnGela! i'm gonna have to get into hockey and the Winterhawks more this season! We should! The team is really good. I just wish they would have followed up that win with another loss and especially not to Seattle. Win or lose, I am going to write another recap after tonight's game, which is going on right now! Winterhawks are down to Tri-City, 2-1 in the 1st period.
