Feb. 27 - I ran across this and thought it was one of the greater things in sports I have seen in a long time. Seriously, in a long time.
Woodgrove High School (Virginia) student Hannah Delmonte sent Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho a message on instagram asking to take her to the prom if she received 2,000 retweets on twitter to her prom invitation to him. He felt that was a too easily attainable, but said if she received 10,000 retweets that he would. She surpassed that in just three hours. Within a few hours, she received the 10,000 retweets (it's over 17,000 retweets as of now). Emmanuel honored his word and last week surprised Hannah at her school.
How it all came about
Interview with Emmanuel on the Rich Eisen Show:
It appears Hannah was more than impressed:
Emmanuel has a terrific perspective on the event:
Tongue-in-cheek from Emmanuel's initial reaction:
And then (the day before Emmanuel surprised Hannah) ...
In a time where there is a lot of criticism of professional athletes, Emmanuel Acho gets it. I believe there are several athletes who are good guys. It is unfortunate that the positive is not reported as often as the negative.
I tip my softball cap to Hannah for inviting him and answering his challenge. Woodgrove's prom is May 9, which gives Emmanuel just a little over two months to get that corsage. Of course, he still has to find the right color scheme for his tuxedo. That should not be difficult, since Hannah tweeted that she has picked out her dress in the color of Eagle green.
As I said above, this is one of the greater things I have seen in all of professional sports.
It kind of makes me want to send a similar message to the Trail Blazers' Robin Lopez. Then again, I am hoping he and the team are in the midst of a playoff series win.
