KASEY'S TAKES
STEEL
Portland's improvement from week one to week could be the story of week 2. After falling to the Arizona Rattlers by 52 points in the opener, they were competitive last week against the Orlando Predators as the game came down to the final drive. Only an interception prevented the Steel from tying or even taking the lead in the final seconds in a 53-50 loss. The offense looked much more crisp, led by QB Danny Southwick, who went 25 of 38 for 223 yards and 5 touchdowns. WR Jabin Sambrano caught 11 passes for 73 yards and a pair of scores. WRs Jared Parry added two touchdown grabs of his own, while WR Tom Gilson had 83 yards and a touchdown. Bryson Kelly rushed for two touchdowns, but finished with negative 1 yard rushing. A bright spot for the Steel this season, kicker Ernesto Lacayo hit his first (and only) FG attempt of the season. He is 9-10 on his point after attempts on the season. The defense was solid, but was unable to force a turnover. That could be a key in this game if the Steel hope to slow down a potent Soul offense. Player to Watch: Danny Southwick (QB). Wild Card: Jared Perry (WR).
SOUL
Philadelphia is one of the more solid teams in the AFL, boasting strong ownership which includes former NFL QB Ron Jawarski and former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil. The Soul looked good in their season opener, beating the Cleveland Gladiators, 69-41. They saw those fortunes reversed in week 2 with a 59-41 loss to the Jacksonville Sharks. QB Dan Raudabaugh is one of the league's best. On the season, he has completed 45 of 69 passes for 10 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Darius Reynolds seems to be his primary target, catching 208 balls for 208 yards and six touchdowns. Sean Kauleinmaoku has caught 12 passes for 164 yards and 4 scores. Jeramie Richardson is one of the better successes in the running game iwth 54 yards on 7 attempts and a touchdown. The Soul's defense will look to contain Southwick. Dwayne Hollis has registered a pair of interceptions this season, while four players have registered a single sack. Player to Watch: Dan Raudabaugh (QB). Wild Card: Sean Kauleinmaoku (WR).
QUOTABLE
Soul head coach Clint Dolezel's assessment of the Steel
They’re improving. They’re a young team. They got a lot of players late, they got a new head coach late, so they are still trying to figure each other out."
Portland HC Ron James on the team's narrow defeat to Orlando
"The team is energized. They know they can compete at a high level."
James on the difference between the loss to Arizona and the loss to Orlando.
"The first game was more of an execution issue. We had good effort, we just shot ourselves in the foot, and we had injuries. Before the Orlando game, we made a few personnel changes, solidified the offensive line a bit and worked more with a core group of four receivers. We were sound in most everything we did (at Orlando), we just couldn’t pull it off at the end."
On the loss of WR Colt Lyerla
"That was a big one. He’s not gone for the season, we think, but he’ll be out for a while. We’re waiting on a doctor’s report to see if there’s extensive damage and it’s going to be a surgical thing, or if it’s more of a routine separation, which might make it just a couple of weeks situation."
James' final word on the Orlando loss and what to expect in the weeks ahead
"The fact of the matter is there are no moral victories in professional sports. You either win or you lose, and we lost that game. It’s good that we did some productive things and the game was close and we had the opportunity to win, but we’re still learning how to win and what to do in critical situations, and that’s on me as coach to get us there.
