The Spokane Empire have a new face in their defensive backfield, signing rookie defensive back Adrian James to the active roster.
James (6'0'', 200 lbs, UTEP) joins the Empire having recently participated in a tryout mini-camp for the Dallas Cowboys. He played his entire 5-year collegiate career with the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP), graduating after the 2014 season. He played in 45 games with the Miners at both cornerback and safety, recording 78 total tackles (43 solo), and 2 interceptions, including a 74 yard interception return against Colorado State in 2011. James also was a member of UTEP's 2010 and 2014 New Mexico Bowl teams and was named UTEP's Special Teams MVP in 2011.
Prior to his commitment at UTEP, James was a standout prep star at Skyline High School (Dallas, TX), and he was ranked by Scout.com as a national top-100 cornerback prospect. During his time at Skyline, he was a multi-positional player, seeing action at not only his primary cornerback position, but at, quarterback and wide receiver. During his senior season in 2009, James earned All-District 9-5A Honors and helped contribute to Skyline's 12-1 season and an appearance in the state title game.
"Out of all the film I watched this year, Adrian's was the most impressive at his position," head coach Adam Shackleford said in the team's press release. "He's a very talented cover corner but also played with a physicality that can't be coached. I feel like he could be that mid-season addition that every team searches for. Off the field, his high character and positive attitude will help him fit in quickly here."
McNeal Released
To make room for James, the Empire released DB Demetruce McNeal.
Acquired in the off-season from Cedar Rapids, McNeal (6'2'', 200 lbs, Auburn) was not active in the team's wins against Tri-Cities and Billings over the past two weeks. In 6 games, he recorded 26.0 total tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1.0 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 2 pass breakups. He was also the Empire's primary kick returner, returning 8 kickoffs back for 98 yards before Trevor Kennedy took over.
