HEIDI'S TAKES
DANGER
The Danger, located at the IFL's home office in Grand Island, Nebraska, will look to return to the playoffs. After winning five of their first seven games last season, they went on to drop eight straight. That still earned them the third seed in the Intense Conference. Eithger returnee Derrick Bernard or former Tri-Cities Fever signal caller Patrick McCain will get the start at QB McCain has the more recent experience, having thrown for 907 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with the Fever last season. Wide receiver Dello Davis has found a new home after finishing second in Champions Indoor Football in receptions and yards (91 and 1,262 yards, respectively) as a member of the Duke City Gladiators in 2016. He led that league with 105.2 yards per game and 35 touchdown grabs. He later saw action in two games for the Danger, catching six passes for 107 touchdowns and two touchdowns. Lyle McCombs was the leading rusher (521 yards and 8 touchdowns) and third-leading receiver (27 receptions, 259 yards and four scores). The Danger defense is completely revamped from last season. Player to Watch: Lyle McCombs (RB). Wild Card: Dello Davis (WR).
SCREAMING EAGLES
The next step in indoor football begins. The Screaming Eagles are creating quite a buzz within the Indoor Football League and open their inaugural season with this game. The 10,000 capacity Maverik Center is the venue. Aside from the fan scouts, Head Coach William McCarthy and few others, the team is largely unknown to most outside of Utah. There will be several recognizable names, however, as several players who attended colleges in the state will look to make an impact. They include WR/TE Devin Mahina (BYU), Ogden native WR Justin Brown (Southern Utah), OL Alex Land (Weber St.) and DB Davion Orphey (University of Utah). Additionally, Salt Lake City natives and brothers Ofa Hautau and Siale Hautau will look to help anchor the defensive line. Running back Breon Allen has IFL experience, as he rushed for 336 yards and six touchdowns for the Colorado Crush last season. McCarthy told SCtoC on February 14 that the starter at quarterback will be a game-time decision. That means either Verlon Reed or Jesse Scroggins will find himself under center for the opener. Player to Watch: Breon Allen (RB). Wild Card: Davion Orphey (DB).
