3/8/17 --
In a surprising move, the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles dismissed their head coach, William McCarthy, after two games. McCarthy's team was 1-1 on the season.
On March 11, the Screaming Eagles announced that they had hired veteran arena coach Matthew Sauk as the new head coach. Sauk, a Michigan native, has a long history in Utah. He was assistant coach of the Arena Football League's Utah Blaze and, before that, was the quarterback of the Utah St, Aggies. Coach Sauk has made his home in Utah with his wife and three children.
Coach Sauk and I spoke Saturday morning, after a softball function for one of his children.
Here is the audio of that transcript of that interview:

Coach Sauk was terrific here. he has a great point about fans needing to learn more about how offenses are called. it's great to get caught up in the moment, but there are some basics that would make the offense run more smoothly. i also like what he said about Verlon Reed, that he's already been playing well. teaching him to go through progressions will be the next step.

This interview is like coming full circle for the site. The coach's comments were really interesting. As unfortunate as Coach McCarthy's dismissal was, I think the Screaming Eagles are in good hands with Coach Sauk.
