Salt Lake Screaming Eagles defensive back James Calhoun has been named the Indoor Football League's Defensive Player of the Week for week 11, the IFL announced today.
Calhoun was a one-man wrecking crew, wreaking havoc on the Spokane Empire offense last week. The Empire escaped with a 31-29 last-minute win, but Calhoun made his mark. He intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown, recorded 5.5 tackles and a pass break up. In the kickoff return game, he had two return s for an average of 18.5 yards.
On the season, Calhoun is the co-leader in interceptions with four and has 12.5 tackles. He has returned he has a 21.6-yard kickoff return average with one returned for a touchdown (co-incidentally, also against the Empire). He also has shown up on offense, recording six catches for 51 yards.
Calhoun is the second Screaming Eagle to win such an honor this season; quarterback Verlon Reed was named Offensive Player of the Week for week 2 after the Screaming Eagles' recorded their first ever win.
Calhoun recently took some time to answer some questions from SCtoC.
Arizona Rattlers running back Darrell Monroe was named Offensive Player of the Week and Wichita Falls Nighthawks kick returner Tyler Williams was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
The Honorable Mention list for Offensive Player of the Week consisted of: WR Jamal Miles (Arizona Rattlers), WR Bryan Pray (Spokane Empire), RB Tyler Williams (Wichita Falls Nighthawks),and WR Marquel Willis (Green Bay Blizzard).
The Honorable Mention list for Defensive Player of the Week consisted of: DB Michael Green (Wichita Falls Nighthawks), DB Dee Maggitt Jr., (Iowa Barnstormers), LB Tyler Knight (Sioux Falls Storm), and LB Nikolas Sierra (Nebraska Danger).
The Honorable Mention list for Special Teams Player of the Week consisted of: KR Marcus Barnett (Cedar Rapids), KR Daniel Lindsey (Colorado Crush), KR Demetruce McNeal (Nebraska Danger), and K Justin Syrovatka (Sioux Falls Storm).
The Crush, who are 2-7 on the season, host the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles on May 8 at 6 p.m. (pacific). SCtoC will feature a preview and game thread for that game.
