5/8/17 --
LOVELAND, CO- The Screaming Eagles soared past the Crush on Monday evening, 64-21 at the Budweiser Events Center.
Salt Lake won the coin toss and deferred to the Crush. Colorado got the drive they wanted, getting a 26 yard touchdown from Lovie Rose III to start the game off. Defense for Colorado looked on top of things early as well, forcing Salt Lake to take a three and out on their first drive and kick the field goal try out of bounds. This is where the tides turned, as the Crush fumbled on their first play off the turnover and Josh Ford of the Screaming Eagles returned it all the way for their first score of the game. After a successful two point conversion, the Eagles led 8-7.
The Crush took the lead just minutes later on a 24 yard field goal, but Verlon Reed took the last moments of the first quarter in his own hands, rushing for 30 yards and capping it with a touchdown to end the first quarter 15-10 in favor of Salt Lake.
The second quarter was all Eagles. After a missed field goal by Spencer Groner of the Crush, Sale Lake marched all the way down the field, with a little help from an unsportsmanlike conduct call on Colorado which made it first down on the 8 yard line. Just a few plays later, the Screaming Eagles found themselves in the back of the end zone after a one yard touchdown run by Delric Ellington. After another fake extra point converted, Salt Lake found themselves up 23-10.
Goldrich gave some life back to the Crush, throwing an eight yard touchdown pass to his usual target, Kyle Kaiser. After a successful extra point, the Crush trailed only by 6, 23-17. The ensuing kickoff was returned 48 yards for a touchdown by Chris Robinson and it was all downhill from there for Colorado. After a missed extra point, the score was 29-17.
The following kickoff was a surprise onside by Salt Lake, and it certainly surprised Colorado. After the recovery, Reed found #84 Devin Mahina on a straight slant down the left side for a 42 yard touchdown. A squib kick found its way back into Eagle hands, and the Screaming Eagles kicked a field goal to end the half up 42-17.
The Eagles showed no signs of slowing down after halftime, using the opening kickoff to eat up 9 minutes of the third quarter on their first drive. After a field goal to end that drive, Salt Lake took a commanding 45-17 lead. Colorado took the ball over but not without some controversy. After a Kaiser drop in the end zone on third down, a quick slant was called down one yard short of the first down. While it was upheld on the field, there was some disagreement from Colorado, and the Crush took their frustration out on Salt Lake, forcing a three and out. Goodrich tossed a 30 yard bomb to Chris Gant and after a successful two point conversion, the Crush narrowed the score to three possessions, 45-25.
The fourth quarter got no better for Colorado after a four yard touchdown run from Verlon Reed. After a failed extra point, Salt Lake increased their lead to 51-25. Colorado struck back after another touchdown pass to Gant and a successful conversion making it 51-33. Salt Lake chewed the clock from there for the last seven minutes, ending with a touchdown pass to Chris Robinson with :55 seconds left in the game, extending the lead for the Screaming Eagles 58-33. An interception by Goldrich with :40 seconds left and a subsequent touchdown from Jesse Scroggins more than sealed the victory for Salt Lake, even after Daniel Lindsay returned the next kickoff back for a touchdown. Too little, too late for the Crush however, as the clock hit zero, making the final score 64-41.
Colorado crashed and crumbled, but couldn’t Crush the Eagles. These two FANchise teams face off for the final time this Friday. That game is at 7:00 p.m. MDT.
COL: Sean Goldrich 12-19, 144 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT Lovie Rose III 6 rec, 75 yds, 1 TD Chris Gant 3 rec, 52 yds, 2 TD
SL: Verlon Reed 18-25, 159 yds, 2 passing TD, 1 INT Verlon Reed, 80 rushing yds, 2 TD Devin Mahina 6 rec, 67 yds, 2 TD To comment on this and other topics on this forum, please login or register.

It was a fun game to follow. Tough one for the Crush, but a nice performance by the Screaming Eagles. Friday's game is going the be very interesting.

The score was a surprise when you think about the first two games. It was entertaining to watch despite that. I really liked how the Screaming Eagles came out after that first drive and took advantage of several things in all facets of the game. It's unfortunate that the Crush lost, but I think that will make them hungrier for Friday's game.

It started off like it was going to be a fun game with lots of action. Turned out that the action all happened for Salt Lake. The Crush were not prepared for some of the stuff that the Eagles brought. The ball definitely did not bounce the way of the Crush. When you can get an interception and then you fumble on the return you know it is not your night.

Takeaways from I had from last night:
-Goldrich is still legit and Nadler would not have made the score any different.
-That was probably the worst defensive performance I've ever seen.
-That was probably the worst special teams I've ever seen.
-Whoever thought it was a good idea to fire Coach Jefferson, needs to enjoy some of that great Colorado air, because the people who run FANchise are dumber than a sack of hammers.
-For being a former defensive player Coach Jones apparently doesn't know what to do with the defense and was completely outcoached in almost every facet of the game of indoor football.
-Coach Sauk despite only winning 1 game is a great coach and I hope he continues to be a HC somewhere next season.
-Officiating was questionable and the IFL REALLY needs instant replay
-Troy and afrats are great commentators
I hope the Crush can perform better next week but after what I just saw, I doubt it.

Agreed that Goldrich played well last night and it would not have mattered which QB was in there. That game was lost by Special Teams and the defense. I do disagree a little that you might be a little hard on Coach Jones. He was thrown into a tough spot, as is any coach that takes over in the middle of the season. Another item to remember is that the indoor game is a lot different than the outdoor game and how the game is played and coached. There were some things that could have been done differently, but most of that bad defense rests on the players. When a player gets an interception and then fumbles on the return you cannot put that on the coach.
I agree that the officiating was bad, but it has been bad every game here in Colorado. And thanks...Troy and I really enjoy working together and we want to make sure that we make this entertaining.

I understand that Coach Jones was thrown in the fire. However, he shouldn't have been thrown in the fire in the first place. It also doesn't excuse the fact that Coach Sauk completely outcoached Coach Jones. The 2 onside kicks and excellent clock management put the Crush in a hole already. Add on that the defense could not make a stop, which even though the outdoor and indoor game are different, the defense could not capitalize, when you also consider the fact he was a former defensive player some of the bad D has to go at least some part on him. I do agree that the players have to be better and majority of blame has to go on them. Something that is irritating about the Crush is, as you've mentioned, the inconsistency. That was not the same team that beat Wichita Falls. That was also not the same team that played against Iowa. Who knows who they will be next week? Because I saw the replay I don't know if ya did or not, did you talk to the head of FANchise?

I appreciate how involved you were with the site while calling the game. I was very much appreciative that you used my point about the Screaming Eagles' high point total this season. Since we started this site with threads about Trail Blazers games and college football, through the AFL and IFL, I have always tried to throw out pertinent information. That you used that on air was tremendous. It makes me feel as if we are doing some good things and keeping up with these teams effectively.

That is a huge thing for this site and for our progress as we move forward.

We typically have a few sites up while we are on the air so that we can search stuff. I will always throw out information and will always give the credit where I got it from. This site does a great job, and even if the Crush are not around next season I will still be part of the forums. Keep up the good work.
