DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers survived a late two-point conversion attempt to hold off the Cedar Rapids Titans in week 13, 56-54
With Iowa up 56-48 with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Brion Carnes hit Tre Parmalee on a 32-yard touchdown pass to pull to within two points. Carnes pass for the two-point conversion failed, leaving the Titans winless in their past six games.
The game was much of a back and forth. The Titans took a 28-21 halftime lead on Connor Hollenbeck's two-yard pass from Carnes 27 seconds before the break. Barnstormers quarterback Travis Partridge threw for two second half touchdowns and ran for two more, and Dee Maggett Jr. returned a Carnes' interception 50 yards for a touchdown.
The Titans outgained the Barnstormers in total yards, 305 to 230, including a 291 to 151 advantage in the passing game. Cedar Rapids was flagged seven times for 40 yards, while Iowa committed two penalties for 25 yards.
With the win, the Barnstormers keep pace in the United Conference, pulling to within a game of conference-leading Sioux Falls Storm, and into a tie with the Wichita Falls Nighthawks at 9-2. The Nighhawks currently have the tiebreaker over the Barnstormers due to their 68-52 win over Iowa in week 1. The teams have a rematch in Wichita Falls on May 20.
Travis Partridge completed 16 of 26 passes for 151 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed 13 times for 50 yards and two scores. Keshaudas Spence, who carried six times for 29 yards, had four receptions for 41 yards. Brady Roland caught five passes for 51 yards and Ryan Balentine had four grabs for 41 yards. Roland and Balentine each caught two touchdowns from Partridge. Maggett and Bryce Enyard each had an interception and Daejohn Love recovered a fumble. Javicz Jones led the Barnstormers with 7.5 total tackles.
The Barnstormers (9-2) will visit the Wichita Falls Nighthawks (9-2) on May 20 at 5:05 p.m. The Titans (1-11) will visit the Sioux Falls Storm (10-1) on May 20 at 5:05 p.m. All times are pacific time.
