LOVELAND, CO- The Crush lived up to their name, crushing the Empire 45-36 behind strong defensive outing on a snowy Thursday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
Colorado received the ball to start the game, and it didn’t start well. QB Sean Goldrich fumbled to start the game, but was able to recover it, forcing a 60 yard field goal that was missed by Spencer Groner. Spokane had a slow start as well, going 3 and out and missing a 44 yard field goal on their opening possession.
The Crush found their rhythm on the ensuing drive, that had Goodrich throwing a 38 yard bomb to Josh Ford, followed by a three yard pass and catch by Kyle Kaiser, giving the Crush a 7-0 lead. The ensuing kickoff sailed out of bounds setting a good tone for the Empire’s second drive of the night. After a 14 yard run by Trevor Kennedy, Kennedy punched it home from seven yards out, tying the game at seven.
The second quarter showed much improvement by both teams and a quicker pace. Goldrich hit Lovie Rose III for 10 yards to start the quarter off, giving the Crush a 14-7 lead. Another poor kickoff attempt lead to good field position for the Empire, after Groner’s kick hit the jumbotron, marking the ball at the 25 yard line. The Crush’s defense came alive after Daniel Lindsay picked off Charles Dowdell in the end zone. Goldrich took advantage, throwing a 25 yard bomb to Cardelro Jones, giving the Crush a two touchdown lead.
The Empire could only muster three more points off two field goal attempts, the second of which was blocked. The Crush took a 21-10 lead into halftime, despite running for minus two yards.
The third quarter was the slowest of the game. Spokane scoring almost immediately to start the half off, with a Dowdell 21 yard pass to Sam Charles to cut the Crush’s lead 21-17. Both teams traded missed field goal attempts before having a little luck thrown their way. A fourth down pass by Goldrich was deflected into the air and snatched by Rose III, leading to a 13 yard touchdown pass to Jones, making it a 28-17 game. Spokane was able to answer with a nine yard touchdown run by Trevor Kennedy, ending the third quarter 28-23.
If you wanted the most action of the night, all you had to do was tune into the fourth quarter. Goldrich found Kyle Kaiser for a 29 yard bomb to extend the Crush lead 35-24 to lead the quarter off. The Empire found a target in the end zone on the next possession, unfortunately for Spokane, that target was Antonio Marshall for Colorado. The Crush couldn’t do much on the free possession, going three and out after a questionable no-call in the secondary. Grover aced the kick however, extending the Crush lead 38-24.
After a quarterback change for the Empire, Aaron Wilmer found Orlando's Harris Sr. on a 39 yard throw after a defensive breakdown for the Crush. Spokane recovered the onside kick, and Wilmer was able to run it into the end zone just a few plays later, cutting the lead to one possession, 38-30.
The Crush put the game away on the kickoff, with Daniel Lindsay taking it 45 yards to the house, extending Colorado’s lead to two possessions. Spokane fumbled on the next possession, ending the game with the final score 45-36. The loss dropped Spokane to 7-5 on the season, Colorado improved to 3-9 on the year.
These two teams face off one more time next week in Spokane.
