HEIDI'S TAKES
CEDAR RAPIDS:
The Titans have had a rough go of it over the past seven weeks. Really, for the entire season. To say the team has struggled would be an understatement. their single win of the season came against the Green Bay Blizzard in week 7. Entering the week, the Blizzard have only two wins on the season. Cedar Rapids concludes a three-game road trip with this match up against the Screaming Eagles.
Of late the Titans have shown some competitiveness. They went through a span of four games (weeks 10-13), falling in all of them, but by an average deficit of just 5.5 points. Two of those losses were by just two points each. Their 54-20 loss last week to the Sioux Falls Storm could be seen as somewhat of an anomaly given that the six-time defending champion Storm already went into the game with just one loss and were playing at home, where they have never lost a home game.
There are some talented players on this roster. Quarterback Brion Carnes is third in the IFL in passing yards per game at 169.1, and is tied with Salt Lake's Verlon Reed with 42 touchdown passes. He has completed 52.8 percent of his passes and 17 interceptions. The Titans do not feature much of a running game. Carnes is the leading rusher, but he is averaging just 15.2 yards per game. No other Titan is averaging more than 6.2 yards per game.
Tre' Parmalee and Damond Powell are a formidable tandem at receiver, Parmalee has 65 catches for 667 yards and 13 touchdowns. Powell has 57 grabs for 768 yards and a team-leading 14 touchdowns. Powell is averaging 59.1 yards per game, which is second in the IFL to only Jordan Jolly of the Wichita Falls Nighthawks. Connor Hollenbeck is a formidable force as the third receiver in the group. He has 33 receptions for 439 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Linebacker Robert Haynes, and cornerbacks B.J. Lowery and Tony Grimes have combined for 159 of Cedar Rapids' 455.5 tackles this season. Haybes has gotten to the opposing quarterback for four sacks, and Carlif Taylor has 3.5. Grimes, Jourdan Wickliffe and Antoine Johnson had each picked off a pair of touchdowns this season. Johnson leads the team in kickoff returns. Grimes and Marcus Barnett have each taken a kickoff to the house.
For the Titans to win this game, Carnes will have to carve up the Screaming Eagles in the passing game, namely using Parmalee and Powell. Cedar Rapids would certainly benefit from some ball control, as they have turned the ball over 21 times this season.

SALT LAKE:
After a pair of wins over the Colorado Crush, the Screaming Eagles laid an egg last week against the Arizona Rattlers. Granted, they were playing the hottest team in the Intense Conference. The win elevated the Rattlers to first place in the conference in a tight race along with the Spokane Empire and Nebraska Danger.
The Screaming Eagles are looking to bring their season into respectability. As all three of their wins this season have come over the Crush, a victory over the Titans could go a long way toward restoring some confidence that they seemed to lack last week against the Rattlers. They still have upcoming games against the Iowa Barnstormers and Empire at home, and a visit to the Green Bay Blizzard sandwiched in between.
Verlon Reed has started every game for the Screaming Eagles, and has, for the most part, been outstanding. He's second in passing yards per game at 174.7 and his 42 touchdown passes are tied for second with the Titans' Brion Carnes. Reed is a force on the ground as well. He is second in total rushing yards at 575 and second in rushing yards per game at 47.9. His 13 rushing touchdowns are tied for fourth in the IFL. He has tossed touchdown passes to 13 different receivers this season.
Devin Mahina is averaging 47.9 receiving yards per game and leads the team in touchdown catches with 11. Juwan Dotson has 35 receptions for 253 yards and six touchdowns. Chris Robinson has been a nice addition to the receiving group, having amassed 15 receptions for 218 yards and six scores in his four games with the team. Robinson also is averaging 19.3 yards per kickoff return with one of those returns going for a touchdown.
Eight different Screaming Eagles defenders have intercepted opposing quarterbacks this season, with James Calhoun leading the active players with four. Kelvin Lee has two picks Calhoun, Ed Burns and Rashad Greene make for a formidable defensive backfield. Jerome McElroy's three sacks have come in just four games, and Ben Compton has 2.5 sacks this season. Lee and Compton each have a fumble recovery.
The key to a Salt Lake win will for Reed to play like he's played for the majority of the season. He'll need to stay under control and be opportunistic in both the passing game and running game. A big play on special teams or defense would likely be a determining factor in this game.

EXTRA
One of the most interesting scoring plays in the IFL is the Rouge. It is, essentially, when a kickoff receiving team cannot get the ball out of the end zone. The kicking team, most often the team which had previously scored, is awarded one point, while the receiving team gets the ball halfway between its own goal line and its five yard line. This can also occur on the opening kickoff of the first or second halves. There are some other particulars of the Rouge. In some circles, this falls under the term "kickology." So, what are the rules of the Rouge? Courtesy of the IFL's Rules, the conditions of the Rouge. The following is from Section 3.2 Types of Scoring: Subsection "E. Rouge".
1. A rouge may only be scored on free kicks and is scored when a member of Team B (receiving team) is not able to advance a free kick out of his own end zone, or a member of the receiving team is declared down with the ball in his possession in his own end zone following a free kick.
2. A rouge will be awarded to the kicking team if the receiving team commits a penalty in the receiving team’s end zone and the ball has not been advance out of the end zone. One (1) point will be awarded to the kicking team and the ball will be placed in play at the receiving team’s two and a half (2 ½) yard line (administration of half the distance to the goal for penalty).
3. On all free kicks, the ball remains alive and is not out of bounds when it hits the ground, a side wall or end wall in the end zone or goal area. On a free kick only, the receiving team must advance the ball out of the receiving team's end zone in order to avoid having a rouge scored against them.
4. The ball remains alive following a free kick in the end zone for the entire free kick down and if it is recovered by the kicking team in the receiving team’s end zone it shall result in a touchdown for the kicking team.
