ANALYSIS
The season begins for these teams with a rematch of the 2017 United Bowl. After having won six straight league championships, the Storm were gearing for their seventh. The Rattlers, playing in their first season in the IFL after 24 seasons in the Arena Football League, had other ideas. The Rattlers stormed out to a 34-7 halftime lead. Sioux Falls Mounted a second-half comeback, but were too deep in the hole, and fell to the IFL newcomers, 50-41.
The Storm suffered a couple of hiccups last season, but were able to use a late-season run to reach the playoffs. They dispatched the Iowa Barnstormers in the United Conference Championship game, 66-32 to propel themselves to their eighth straight United Bowl. That is a remarkable feat given that they've been in the IFL for nine seasons. The Storm have never failed to win fewer than 10 wins in a single season, accumulating to an overall IFL record of 115-15. Kurtis Riggs returns as head coach of the Storm for his 16th season (the team played in prior leagues). Riggs' 40-game winning streak is the longest in all of pro sports. SCtoC's Drew Galyardt recently spoke with coach Riggs.
Lorenzo Brown is as good as it gets when it comes to IFL quarterbacks. He's a complete quarterback who completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 1,820 yards with 34 touchdowns and 8 picks. He let the team in rushing as well with 700 yards on 16 carries with 24 touchdowns. Running back Robbie Rouse take a lot of heat off Brown, and rused for 614 yards and 15 scores. Rouse Also caught 18 balls for 176 yards and a touchdown. The receiving corps will be new, but Brown will look to Judd Harrold to pick up much of the wide receiver duties. The Storm has lost three major players on defense, but they've added a pair of former IFl Rookies of the year. Jabari Gorman and Trey Wafford won those honors in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Sioux Falls scored a coup in the kicking game when they signed former Colorado Crush kicker Miles Bergner. In just for games with the Crush, Bergner earned IFL Special Teams Player of the Week twice, hitting a perfect 10 of 10 on extra points and 12 of 14 on field goals.
The Rattlers stormed into their first season in the IFL, sort of. The team went 2-2 to begin the season, but won 10 of their last 12 games and easily punched their ticket to the playoffs. Arizona blew out the Nebraska Danger in the Intense Conference Championship en route to a berth in the United Bowl. The Rattlers may have surprised the indoor and arena community with their 50-41 win over the Storm in the United Bowl. Kevin Guy is the head coach of the Ratters. He is entering his 14 season as head man, dating back to when the team was in the Arena Football League. The Rattlers won three straight championships under guy in the AFL from 2012 to 2014.
Indoor Football league 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year Verlon Reed Jr. is the new starting quarterback, taking over for Cody Sokol. Reed was spectacular for the Screaming Eagles in 2017, passing for 2,734 yards, 54 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He gained 759 yards on 155 carries with 16 scores. All of those numbers are in the top five of the IFL. Darrell Monroe and Keitrich Harmon are both back for Arizona and will provide the running attack. Wide receiver Anthony Amos will look to further on his 2017 campaign of 48 receptions for 602 yards and 19 touchdowns. Defensive back Allen Chapman returns to shore up the defensive backfield, and Chris McCallister is the pass threat, having recorded an AFL second-best 10 sacks last season. Sawyer Petre, who it 60 percent of his field goals last season, is back to take on the kicking duties.
