FINAL - Titans 47, Blizzard 39

CEDAR RAPIDS - In a matchup which had all the elements of a traditional rivalry, the Cedar Rapids Titans scored the only points of the fourth quarter to come away with a 47-39 win tonight.
The Titans lone win of the 2017 season came when they squeezed out a 41-37 win in Green Bay.
Cedar Rapids got out to a quick start, scoring on its first possession of the game on a 2-yard run from quarterback Jake Medlock. Jordan Endries put Green Bay on the board courtesy a 34-yard field goal right up the middle. Thomas Tyler's 7-yard run gave Cedar Rapids a 13-3 cushion when he ran it in from seven yards out with 5:51 left in the first quarter.
The Blizzard countered on a 1-yard run from quarterback Christian Lemay early in the first quarter. Medlock's 29-yard strike from newly signed Javon Bell once again put the Titans up by 10. Jasen Oden Jr. cut into the lead with a 3-yard run before Michael Georgetti's 16-yard field goal put the Titans up by a touchdown with 5:00 to go in the first half. Lemay's 3-yard run tied the score at 23-23. The teams traded field goals, Georgetti hitting from 23 yards and Endries from 32, and the score was knotted at 26-26 heading into intermission.
After stopping the Blizzard on fourth and goal at the Titans' one yard line, the Titans opened the third quarter big with a 40-yard pass from Medlock to Connor Hollenbeck. Kick returner B.J. Hill gave Green Bay exceptional field position with a 53-yard kick return on the ensuing kickoff. Lemay punched it in from two yards to once again tie the game. The Blizzard capitalized on a Titans fumble on the kickoff as Lemay punched it in from a yard out, which gave the Blizzard its first lead of the game at 39-33. The lead wouldn't last long, as the Titans would head into the final quarter with a 40-39 advantage courtesy of a Medlock strike to a wide open Thomas Tyler for 32 yards as time expired.
Green Bay missed an opportunity to retake the lead as it was driving deep into Cedar Rapids territory , but the Blizzard fumbled and Cedar Raids took over, capping an eight play, 48-yard drive with a 2-yard run from Tyler. Georgetti's extra point put the Titans up 47-39 with 7:17 to go in the fourth.
It was the first regular season home win for the Titans in nearly 21 months. On June 11, 2016 they defeated the now-defunct Billings Wolves, 28-20 (On July 9 they hosted, and defeated, the Wichita Falls Nighthawks in the United Conference Championship game, 66-36).
Hill, a IFL Hall of Famer who returned to the Blizzard this season, came into the game as the all-time career league leader in both return yards with 3,508 and interceptions with 20.
There were 19 accepted penalties in the game, 12 for the Blizzard and 7 for the Titans. The Titans outgained the Blizzard in total offense, 294 yards to 178, including a 222 to 64-yard advantage in the passing game. Each team lost a fumble.
Medlock was excellent for the Titans as he completed 17 of 22 passes for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown. Thomas rushed 10 times for 26 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. He also caught 3 passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. Hollenbeck had 6 grabs for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Javon Bell had 5 receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown. Moses White registered 9 total tackles and Kwame Bell recovered a fumble for Cedar Rapids. Georgetti hit 5 of 6 exra point attempts and was 2 of 2 on his field goal attempts with a long of 23.
Lemay completed 6 of his 12 passes for 64 yards, while rushing for 75 yards on 19 carries with 4 touchdowns. Jasen Oden, Jr. had 22 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. Chris Melott once again led the Titans in receiving, this time with 3 receptions for 31 yards. Josh Jenkins led the Blizzard defense with 7 total tackles. Hill had 4.5 total tackles and a half a sack. Hill also averaged 28.0 kickoff return yards. Endries hit 3 or 5 of his extra point attempts and was a perfect 2 of two on his field goal tries with a ling of 34 yards.
The Blizzard (0-2) will be in Grand Island on March 11 to face the Nebraska Danger (1-0) with a 1 p.m. pacific (3 p.m. central) kickoff. The Titans (1-1) will visit the Sioux Falls Storm (0-1) on March 12; kickoff in that one is slated for 4:05 p.m. pacific (6:05 p.m. central).
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL's Official YouTube Channel. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game.
