ANALYSIS
Green Bay and Nebraska have had varied levels of successes in the IFL. The teams met just once in 2017, with the Danger coming away with the 41-25 win. The Blizzard hope to regain their form from their first three IFL seasons from 2010 to 2-12 when they went a collective 32-10. This season, they already find themselves in a 0-2 whole to start the season. The Danger made it to the Intense Conference championship Game last season, only to fall to the eventual champion Arizona Rattlers. A 44-31 home win over the Cedar Rapids Titans has the Danger on track in their quest to return to the playoffs.
The Blizzard have had a rough time of it over the past few years, finishing just 3-13 last season with two of those wins coming over the Cedar Rapids Titans. This is the first of three straight games against 2017 playoff teams. They face the Rattlers in week 4 and the Storm in week 5 before having two straight bye weeks, in weeks 6 and 7. This means the road doesn't get any easier. Green Bay relies on a run-heavy offense guided by rookie quarterback Christian Lemay. He is a dual threat player out of Jacksonville State University. The big story for the Blizzard is defensive back and kick returner B.J. Hill, an IFL Hall of Famer, who is the all-time league leader in kickoff return yards with 3,508 and interceptions with 20.
Lemay has completed 43.5 of his passes through the first game, but his impact comes more in the running game with his 151 yards and 5 touchdowns. He rushed for four of those in the week 2 loss to the Titans, and is averaging 75.5 yards per game on the ground. Should the Blizzard better be able to balance their run-pass ration, it could keep opposing defenses of balance. Jasen Oden Jr. could be a relief in the running game. Wide receiver Chris Malott out of Southeastern Louisiana, is the go to receiver in the passing game and leads the team in receptions with 6 and receiving yards with 59. Erick Brundidge has a nice outing last season and could figure in to the passing game as well. Josh Jenkins led the team with 7 total tackles. Defensive back Manny Asprilla joins Hill in the defensive backfield and will look to slow down the Danger's receivers. Hill is the leader in kickoff return average at 28.0 and nearly took one to the house last week. Jordan Endries is 2 of 2 on his field goal attempts with a long of 34, and is 3 of 5 on his extra point attempts.
The Danger want to punch their ticket to the playoffs and a trip to the United Bowl. They are located in the Central Nebraska city of Grand Island, home of the IFL's headquarters. The team went 9-7 in 2017 before falling to the Arizona Rattlers in the Intense Conference Championship game. The Danger have appeared in three United Bowls from 2013 to 2015, each time falling to the Sioux Falls Storm. Veteran IFL coach Mark Stoute is at the helm for the Danger, and back to the team this year is quarterback Damien Fleming. Fleming is a veteran who is tasked with taking the Danger to the next level. The Danger, who are coming off a bye, will face the Cedar Rapids Titans in week 4.
Fleming was efficient in the opener against the Titans, completing over 70 percent of his passes for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was equally effective on the ground, rushing 10 times for 56 yards with 2 touchdowns. Fleming may just be getting his legs back under him after being away from the league for over a season. He has a talented cast around him. Angelo Pease is a reliable running back who rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown in the opening-week win over the Titans. The Danger may have found an emerging star in wide receiver Gregory Dent Jr., who had 6 receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown. Eric Thomas is a threat in the passing game as well, having caught 5 passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. Linebacker Myle Tavarres was sensational in the season opener, tallying 10 total tackles, a sack and 2 tackles for loss. Ra'Shawde Myers and Xzavie Jackson each had a sack in that game, and Nick Brassell had 3 pass break ups. Michael Georgetti hit 1 of his 2 field goal attempts, and was an identical 1 of 2 on his extra point attempts.
