ANALYSIS
These teams have the largest distance of travel of any two IFL teams. The cities are separated by a 1,830-mile drive and a three-hour, 35-minute plane flight. They are also the only two IFL teams which also feature National Football League teams in their respective cities (Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals. The Rattlers won both of last season's meeting. The first was a 30-29 victory in Green Bay, and a 64-29 win in the second match up. The teams face each other three times in 2018 with two of those being scheduled in Phoenix. The Blizzard are in their ninth season in the IFL and the Rattlers are in their second season in the league.
Green Bay has had a rough introduction in the new season. After dropping the opener at home to the Iowa Barnstormers, the Blizzard took the Cedar Rapids Titans to the fourth quarter before losing by eight. They ran into the Danger in Nebraska in week three, dropping that game by 36 points. The Danger are on the third game of a three game road trip. Head coach Chris Williams' crew has featured more of a running attack on offense than the pass by about a two-to-one margin. Christian Lemay has gotten the call under center. There have been mixed results at times. The Blizzard are searching for their first win of the season, but earning that over the defending champions appears to be a tall order.
Lemay is averaging 4.3 yards per rush and is averaging 39 rushing yards per game. Where he has struggled is in the passing game where he is completing just over 37 percent of his passes and has thrown for just 47.0 yards per game. In his 35 pass attempts, he has thrown for just a single interception. Backup Raymond Cotton could see some time, but he's completed just 2 of 9 passes for 19 yards in two games this season. Jasen Oden, Jr. is the featured back, and is solid. He's averaging 34.7 yards per game and serves as a rushing compliment to Lemay. When it comes to the receiving group, Chris Malott is far and away the favorite target of Blizzard quarterbacks. The 6'5" wide receiver out of Southeastern Louisiana University has 8 receptions for 108 yards and both of the Blizzard's touchdown catches on the season. On defense, it's a shoe of the Joshes, with Josh Jenkins leading the team with 16.5 total tackles and Josh Francis's 2.5 tackles for loss to go along with his 13.5 total tackles. IFL Hall of Famer B.J. Hill is an apt defender who is most effective in the kick return game, with 312 total return yards. Jordan Endries has taken over in the kicking game, hitting 3 of 5 of his field goal attempts with a long of 43 yards.
Arizona is reeling a bit after their week 3 loss to the Iowa Barnstormers. Iowa is a strong team which is riding is successful 13-3 2017 season into 2018. Effectively, that means the Rattlers ran into a Brick wall last week. They looked solid for the latter parts of the game, but were unable to overcome and win. The Rattlers find themselves at 1-1 back in the comfortable confines of Talking Stick Resort Arena to face the league's only winless team. Verlon Reed, Jr. will miss his second full game after suffering an undisclosed injury in the first quarter of the season opener against the Sioux Falls Storm. Jeff Ziemba has been the quarterback in the interim, and the Rattlers signed former Colorado Crush signal caller Sean Goldrich.
Ziemba will likely get the call under center. Head coach Kevin Guy doesn't seem like a coach which pulls the trigger quickly. Reed is eligible to return in week 5, but whether he will be healthy enough to do so remains a mystery. Should Ziemba falter, the Rattlers could turn to Goldrich, who entered last season as the starter for the Crush. Ziemba has completed 42.9 percent of his passes, but has tossed 5 interceptions over Arizona's first two games. Running back Darrell Monroe is second in the IFL only to Barnstormers' quarterback Drew Powell in rushing with 109 total yards and 54.5 rushing yards per game. He rushed for 89 in the Rattlers' season-opening win over the Storm. Anthony Amos is a veteran and still can break the long play. Jamal Miles, a running back, is the second-leading receiver on the team with 5 catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. Another veteran, Arkeith Brown, leads the team in tackles, and is as much as a threat to make a big play on defense as Amos is to break one on offense. Chris McCallister has 9 total tackles, along with a team-leading 3.5 taclkles for loss. The Rattlers have just one forced turnover, a fumble recovery by Joshua Gordon. Sawyer Petre is a premiere IFL kicker, hitting his only field goal of 25 yards.
