ANALYSIS
The Storm and the Danger clash for the first of three games this season. The Storm are coming off a bye week and are looking for their fourth straight win. The Danger got back on track with a quality win over the Iowa Barnstormers in week 6, just seven days after suffering their first loss of the season. Sioux Falls has won 10 of the 11 overall meetings in the series, as well as all three post-season games between the teams. Those were three straight United Bowls; 43-20 in 2013, 63-46 in 2014, and 62-27 in 2015. The Storm, which have won seven straight regular season games in the series, defeated Nebraska, 41-38, in the teams' most recent meeting on June 10, 2017. The Danger's lone win over the Storm came on March 2, 2013 when they came out on top, 30-21. Each team's lone loss this season have come at the hands of the Arizona Rattlers.
After dropping their season opener to the Rattlers, the Storm have reeled off three straight wins. Quarterback Lorenzo Brown appears to have the ship pointed in the right direction. The Storm's 52-40 win over the Iowa Barnstormers in week 4 was their signature win of the young season The Storm defense is the best in the IFL, holding opponents to a league-lows 33.8 points and 194.5 yards per game. Head coach Kurtiss Riggs is the longest-tenured IFL head coach, having accumulated an overall 113-21 regular season record, and is 18-2 in the playoffs.
Brown leads the league in passing yards per attempt at 7.7 and completion percentage at 67.7 percent. He's a legitimate thread in both the passing game and the rushing games. He averages over 144 passing yards and 43.2 rushing yards per game. Brown will look to put points on the board against the top-ranked Danger defense. Lyle McCombs averages 29.3 rushing yards per game on an average of 3.9 yards per carry. He takes just enough pressure off of Brown to keep defenses honest. McCombs has also caught 7 passes out of the backfield for 78 yards. Mike Tatum and Judd Harrold are a formidable one-two punch at the receiver positions. Each have 18 receptions, for 215 and 209 yards, respectively. Harrold's 7 touchdown catches are good for fourth most in the IFL. Brandynn Clark's 7 receptions for 67 yards and 2 touchdowns have come in the past two games. Trey Wafford has 3 pass break ups and 2.5 tackles for loss to go along with his team-leading 26.5 total tackles. Owen Williams, Chris Martin, Claude Davis and Wafford combine for 5 sacks for the Storm. Miles Bergner leads the IFL in field goal efficiency, having completing 74.1 percent of his attempts.
Nebraska is flying high after its solid win at home over the Iowa Barnstormers, who came into the game at 3-1. It was the Danger's first win over a plus-.500 team this season. The Danger is first in the IFL in scoring offense with their 49 points and 237.8 yards per game. They also are atop the league rankings in touchdowns scored (33). Their defense leads the league in sacks with 11 take downs. The Danger are amidst a five-game stretch where they play plus-.500 teams. Mark Stoute, in his first season as head coach of the Danger, has a 45-18 IFL coaching record.
Jesse Scroggins made his second start of the season, and made the most of it. He completed 9 of 18 passes for 154 yards and 4 touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for 36 yards in the Danger's win over the Barnstormers. Scroggins stands atop the league rankings in passing yards per completion at 14.7. Scroggins has taken over for the injured Damien Fleming, who is on Season Ending Injured Reserve. Angelo Pease averages 29.2 rushing yards per game and 3.2 yards per carry. Eric Thomas Thomas has 8 touchdown receptions, 3 coming last weekend against Iowa. He leads the league with 71.0 receiving yards per game. Gregory Dent has 250 yards on 21 catches and 4 touchdowns on the season. Linebacker Myke Tavarres has 5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks to go with his league-leading 36.0 total tackles. Xzavie Jackson's 4 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss are tops in the league in those categories. Jackson also has 2 fumble recoveries. Tavita Faaiu has added 3 sacks to the defensive cause for Nebraska. Brad Hatfield is 5 of 15 on field goal tries with eight of those misses coming from 30 yards or further. He has a season-long of 38 yards.
