ANALYSIS
These teams met in week 2, as the Titans scored the only points of the fourth quarter to propel them to a 47-39 win. It's the second straight win in the series for Cedar Rapids, having defeated the Titans, 41-37, on April 1, 2017. That was the only win for the Titans last season. The Titans have an edge of 11-7 on the season. The Blizzard won the first-ever meeting between the teams; 64-12, on March 9, 2012. That is the largest margin of victory in the series. The Titans have dropped three straight after that win over the Blizzard, while Green Bay is winless in 2018. The third game of the season between the teams is in week 16 of the season, at Green Bay.
The Titans' win in week 2 was their first win in Cedar Rapids in 21 months. It also was the first win of the Marvin Jones era with the Titans. Jones served as interim head coach of the Colorado Crush over the latter half of the 2017 season. A win for the Titans would be huge here. They are in danger of finding themselves out of the playoff hunt. Cedar Rapids is a team which is fighting for its 2018 season. They've had strong moments on defense, as well as some shining moments on offense. The Titans boast potential IFL Rookie of the Year candidate in quarterback Jake Medlock, who earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for week 2. The Titans are on the road in the subsequent two weeks as they visit the Sioux Falls Storm in week 9, and against the Arizona Rattlers in week 10. They return home to face the Rattlers in week 11.
Medlock leads the IFL with 185 passing yards per game. He also leads the IFL with 17 touchdown passes. He has just two interceptions on the season, with one each coming in the past two games. He also leads in passing attempts (201) and completions (118). While not as an adept rusher as some other quarterbacks in the IFlL, he leads the league with 8 rushing touchdowns on the season. He has largely been efficient for the Titans, despite their record. If given the opportunity, he can direct the Titans to a win in this one. Tyler Thomas's 23.8 yards per game helps deflect the pressure of the Titans' passing attack. Connor Hollenbeck is the leader in all statistical categories for Cedar Rapids. he averages 10.1 yards per catch and 57.5 yards per game. He is tied for second in the league with 8 touchdown grabs. Jordan Smith has 23 receptions for 176 yards and seems to be the short-yardage specialist for the team. Ricarlo Bell's 4.5 tackles for loss go alond with his 3.0 sacks. Former Salt Lake Screaming Eagle James Calhoun leads the defense with 29 total tackles, an interception and 3 tackles for loss. Moses White has recovered 2 fumbles. Michael Gerogetti is 15 of 22 on his extra point attempts and has hit 4 of 11 of his field goal tries, with a long of long of 23 yards. He has missed all seven of his attempts from beyond 30 yards.
The Blizzard have been competitive in several games this season, but find themselves at the bottom of the IFL standings. If they are to salvage their season, a win over the 1-5 Titans would be the place to begin. The Blizzard were the only team to fall victim to the Titans last season and, since have yet to win a game. Green Bay dismissed its head coach, Chris Williams last week and has replaced him with former Blizzard player and coach Corey Roberson. It's not an unexpected move, though it remains to see what will happen to the team. Perhaps they will be reinvigorated under new direction. The Blizzard recorded winning seasons in their first three seasons, winning 11 games in 2011 and 2012. since then, they have yet to post a winning record since. They have gone 20-59 since that time (including this season).
Green Bay is a definite run-heavy offense. The Blizzard started the season with Christian Lemay under center, but Lemay was released on April 3. They turned to Raymond Cotton in their most recent game. Results were been mixed. Cotton was released on April 12; two days after Roberson brought in Bryan Hicks as the new quarterback. Hicks is expected to get his first start for the Blizzard in this game.. Serge Trezy could emerge as the lead running back, having gained 54 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown in the game against the Storm. When it comes to the receiving group, Chris Malott leads the bunch. He has more than half of the team's receptions (15 of 29) and has the team's only 4 receiving touchdowns on the season. He is averaging 36.8 receiving yards per game. Jerome Jones leads the team with 13.2 yards per catch. It's a defense led by the Josh's. Josh Francis adds 4.5 tackles for loss to his two sacks and 26.5 total tackles. Josh Jenkins also has 26.5 total tackles on the season. Robert Metz has also recored a sack for the Blizzard. Already an IFL Hall of Famer, B.J. Hill averages 21.8 kickoff return yards and has a return touchdown to his credit. Jordan Endries has hit 9 of 11 extra point attempts, as well as 4 of 7 of his field goal tries. Two of those misses came from father than 40 yards, and he has a long of 34 yards.
