ANALYSIS
These teams have played just four games over the past two seasons. The most recent, just days ago is one which will go down in the ages of the Indoor Football League lore. Just when it seemed as thought the Titans may earn their second win of the season, the Rattlers scored on a one-yard run by running back Darrell Monroe with two seconds to go to complete the comeback with a 84-83 win. As much as the score was indicative of a wild game, even more wild were the 11 rushing touchdowns from Rattlers Monroe. That total eclipsed the previous record of seven set by Darius Fudge of the Wichita Wild on July 2, 2009 against the Alaska Wild. The Rattlers hold a 4-0 record against the Titans since entering the IFL prior to last season. Week 10's one-point win is the closest in series history, which includes a two-point Rattlers' victory in the initial game between the teams, a 34-32 decision May 5, 2017 at Cedar Rapids.
The Rattlers, defending United Bowl champions, come into this game at 7-1. Arizona has won six straight after suffering their only loss of the season back in week 3 to the Iowa Barnstormers. The Rattlers would love nothing more than to run the table and find themselves back in the United Bowl with the game being held in Phoenix. There are still a half-dozen games yet to play but, behind their running game, the Rattlers are plowing ahead. They face a Titans team which will be hungry after losing an 18-point fourth quarter lead last week. Monroe, who earned IFL Offensive Player of the Week honors, was the catalyst. The Titans will look for a way to slow him down, while still putting up the kind of offensive performance which they featured in the game. Veteran head coach Kevin Guy, who was with the Rattlers in the Arena Football League, is 18-5 with the team in the IFL.
In addition to his 11 rushing touchdowns last week, Monroe gained an IFL season rushing high 140 yards on 29 carries. What's more amazing is that nine of those touchdowns came in the second half and that all came from six yards out or less. Appearing in just six of the Rattlers' nine games this season, Monroe leads the league in rushing yards with 492 and rushing touchdowns with 21 (meaning, that over half of those came in one game). He also caught 6 passes for 65 yards against the Titans. Jeff Ziemba is third in the IFL in passing yards with 979. Ironic to the rest of the league, Ziemba's passing compliments the running game rather than the other way around. The rookie quarterback has thrown 21 touchdowns against 8 interceptions. Jamal Miles is a formidable threat in the running and passing games. He averages 5.2 yards per carry, and leads the team with receptions with 32, while also catching 7 touchdowns. Veteran Anthony Amos comes in averaging 15.1 yards per catch and is tied for second in the league with 11 touchdown grabs. Dezmon Epps has come on as of late in the receiving game and in the kick return game, having earned Special Teams Player of the Week for his 32.9 yards per kickoff return in week 10. Epps has 13 catches for 190 yards and a touchdown. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown against the Titans. Arkeith Brown adds a fumble recovery and 3 interceptions to his team-leading 36 tackles. Joshua Gordon has recorded 2.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Sawyer Petre has connected on 5 of 13 of his field goal tries with a long of 41. Five of the eight misses have come from beyond 30 yards.
The Titans can take away a lot from the one-point loss to the Rattlers in week 10. Standing at 1-7, they are only three games back of the Nebraska Danger in the playoff race. Behind the passing attack led by Jake Medlock. Under any other circumstance, scoring 83 points would be good enough to win; probably in a blowout. The Titans return to Cedar Rapids with a bad taste in their mouths, and they would love nothing more to quell that with burnt snake. It won't be easy, but if they can find a way to replicate that offensive output and slow down Monroe and the Rattlers' rushing attack, they could have a chance to double their win total. Rest assured, Head coach Margin Williams, a former NFL linebacker, will have his team ready. Marvin Williams is in his second season as an IFL head coach and has a 2-13 record in that time.
Monroe's career game effectively overshadowed an excellent performance by Medlock. The rookie quarterback out of Florida International University completed 12 of 13 passes for 210 yards and 6 touchdowns with no interceptions. His lone interception came late in the fourth quarter when his fourth-down pass into the end zone sailed high. Coincidentally, it was the only drive in which the Titans were stopped on the night. Medlock leads the IFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Medlock averages 186.5 passing yards per game; over 40 more than any other IFL quarterback. Raphael Lawson-Gayle averages 5.3 yards per rush and has come on to compliment the passing game nicely. He rushed 13 times for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Rattlers, including a 44-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game. Connor Hollenbeck, the featured receiver, has been put on Short Term Injured Reserve. Marquel Wade had 124 receiving yards in last week's game. Jordan Smith and Javon Bell also figure in the passing game and can make an impact in any given game. James Calhoun, who led the league with 9 interceptions last season with the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles, adds an interception and fumble recovery to his team-leading 44 tackles. Ricarlo Bell's 4 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss each rank second in the IFL in those categories. Former Green Bay Blizzard kicker Zeke Arevalo takes over at the position for the Titans. He was a perfect 2 of 2 on field goal attempts, with a long of 22 yards against the Rattlers.
