ANALYSIS
The Storm and the Barnstormers are two of the top three teams in the IFL. Each is coming off wins and each is on the upswing. They have met seven times in the regular season and once in the playoffs, with the Storm winning every meeting. The Storm outscored the Barnstormers 21-9 in the second half en route to a 52-40 win in week 4 this season. The largest point disparity in the series came in their first meeting, an 87-11 win by the Storm on April 25, 2015. The Storm also registered a 70-13 victory on March 20, 2017. The Barnstormers would go on an 11-game winning streak before losing to the Storm in last seasons finale, 45-24. The teams met a week later in the United Conference Championship Game, 66-32. Of their three regular season losses in 2017, two came to the Storm (three if the playoff loss is added).
The Barnstormers are in good shape after a pair of wins over the Nebraska Danger (41-25) and Green Bay Blizzard (46-25). According to some reports, quarterback Drew Powell will return following a two-week tryout with the Saskatchuan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. While Powell's hope of moving up to the next level, he is expected to step back into his starting role as quarterback of the Barnstormers. Backup Grant Rohach did a nice job in relief of Powell in the past two games and it might not be surprising to see him in spot duty in this game. Powell completed 9 of 19 passes for 111 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the first meeting against the Storm. He also rushed 18 times for 98 yards and 3 touchdowns in that game. Iowa is the only team to have defeated the defending champion Arizona Rattlers; a 38-28 victory in week 3 in Des Moines. Following a home game in week 12 against the Cedar Rapids Titans, The Barnstormers will visit Phoenix to face the Rattlers. The teams face each other a third time, on June 2, back in Des Moines.
At the time he left for his tryout, Powell was near the top of the IFL listings in passing yards and touchdowns. He was potent as well running the ball. Powell had been leading the league in rushing yards at 338, and had rushed for 6 touchdowns. Should Roach get the call, he will be ready after throwing for 261 yards with 7 touchdowns and an interception. Iowa features one of the most talented receiving trios in the IFL, Brady Roland, Ryan Balentine and Jonathan Duarte have combined for 72 receptions for 802 yards and 20 touchdowns. Roland leads the group thus far, averaging 13.4 yards per catch. Balentine spreads the field in the passing game, leaving a nightmare for opposing defensive backfields. Duarte was put in Short Term Injured Reserve on May 3. Sheldon Augustine, who averages 12.3 yards per catch, will step in place of . Jamal Tyler got the call at running back last week against the Blizzard. Tyler and Donovan Williams can take a lot of pressure off of Powell during any game and could be crucial here. Bryce Enyard's 7 interceptions lead the IFL. He has two each in the past two games and was just named IFL Defensive Player of the Week for week 10. Enyard also is second on the team with 37.5 total tackles while leading the team with 6 pass break ups. Zachary Allen seems to be in on every play for the Barnstormers' defense. B.J. Butler leads Iowa with 7 tackles for loss. Cody Barber is an indoor football respectable 9 of 17 on his field goal attempts. Six of the eight misses have come from beyond 37 yards which, often, are an alternative to punting.
The Storm have won six of their last seven games, including that March 18 meeting against the Barnstormers. The only loss for Sioux Falls during that time came at home against the Rattlers. In that game, in Sioux Falls, The Rattlers outscored the Storm 28-9 in the second and third quarters and held off a late Arizona rally in the loss. Sioux Falls began the season with a 39-33 loss to the Rattlers in Phoenix. Lorenzo Brown was spectacular in the passing game the first game this season against the Barnstormers. He completed 22 of 26 passes for 241 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also rushed in the game. Mike Tatum caught 8 of those passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. A Storm win could essentially put them in the driver's seat for home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. It would give the Storm a one-and-a-half game lead over the Barnstormers, along with securing the tiebreaker (basically, a two-and-a-half-game lead in the standings with a win). After this one, the Storm are at home against the Nebraska Danger, then visit the Cedar Rapids Titans before going on their final bye in week 14.
We say this in every preview of the Storm, but Lorenzo Brown is one of the best in the business. He is second in passing yards per game at 144.9 and in passing touchdowns overall with 22. Brown is completing 62.1 percent of his passes. He leads the league in yards per completion (14.1) and Yards per attempt (8.8). He also is first among all IFL quarterbacks with 13 rushing touchdowns. Brown is a variable dual-threat quarterback. After the second loss to the Rattlers, he seems invigorated and ready to go. Lyle McCombs is fourth in the IFL with 327 yards and is tied for third with 9 touchdowns. McCombs is a solid rusher and a great compliment to Brown. He also has 15 receptions for 138 yards. Tatum is a Storm stalwart whose 453 receiving yards rank second in the IFL. He ranks fourth in with 56.6 receiving yards per game. Judd Harrold is a major red zone target who can break out for a big game any given weekend. Jabari Gorman's 4 interceptions are second only to the Storm's Enyard. He also leads the team in pass break ups with 6. Chris Martin, who is tied for second on the team with 39.5 total tackles (along with Trey Wafford), has a team-leading 3.5 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries. Derwin Reed also has a pair of fumble recoveries. Miles Bergner leads the league with a 72.2 field goal percentage. He has a long of 45 yards, and all five of his misses have come from beyond 30 yards.
