SIOUX FALLS STORM - Drew Powell threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two more as the Iowa Barnstormers moved into sole possession of second place in the Indoor Football League standings after defeating the Sioux Falls Storm tonight at Denny Sanford Premiere Center.
The Barnstormers moved to 6-2 with the 49-42 win, while the Storm fell to 6-3 and slipped to third place in the standings. It is the first-ever win for the Barnstormers in the history of the franchises.
Jamal Tyler's three-yard run put the Barnstormers up early. Tyler added an 11 yard run with 5:15 left in the opening quarter and the Barnstormers were up 14-0, a lead they held through the end of the first quarter.
Drew Powell ran it in from three yards to extend Iowa's lead to 21-0. The Storm got on the board with just over 10 minutes to go in the first half on Lorenzo Brown's one-yard run. Powell found Brady Roland on a 44-yard touchdown pass to make the score 27-7. The Storm would go on a roll over the latter half of the second quarter, beginning with another one-yard run from Brown. The defense got into the act, recording a safety which pulled the Storm to within 11. Lyle McCombs' one-yard run with 1:47 left in the second quarter pulled Sioux Falls to within 27-23 with 1:47 left. That turned out to be the halftime tally.
The Storm took their first lead of the game at the 5:45 mark of the third quarter on a two-yard run by backup quarterback Dillon Turner, but Iowa came right back with a 27-yard run from Powell.
Brown hit Tatum for 34 yards to open the fourth quarter and the Storm were up 36-33. But, on this night, the Barnstormers would not be denied. They scored on a pair of passes from Powell, to Ryan Balentine for 21 yards and to Sheldon Augustine for eight yards, to open up a 10-point lead at 46-36. Miles Bergner's 39-yard field goal drew the Storm to within a touchdown. Cody Barber drilled a 17-yarder with 2:43 left in the quarter. Bergner hit again, this time from 25 yards before Iowa was able to run out the clock.
It was Powell's first game back after missing the past two games while working out for the Saskatchwan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.
The Barnstormers out-gained the Storm in total offense 266 yards to 190 including a 146- to 63-yard advantage in the rushing game. Each team committed a single turnover in the game. Iowa was penalized 10 times for 45 yards, while Sioux Falls was flagged just once for a single yard.
Powell hit 12 of his 16 attempts for 121 yards and a trio of touchdowns. He also rushed 18 times for 100 yards and 2 scores. Jamal Tyler added 31 yards off 8 carries to his 2 rushing touchdowns. Roland led the Barnstormers in receiving with 54 yards off 3 grabs and a touchdown. Balentine had 4 receptions for 47 yards and a score. Augustine hauled in 5 passes for 20 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Enyard's 6 total tackles led the Iowa defense, and Jourdan Wickliffe recorded the interception off of Brown.
Brown went 9 of 21 for 124 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while rushing 9 times for 28 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Tatum had 3 catches for a game-high 69 yards and a touchdown. Damien Ford caught 3 balls for 24 yards. Damond Smith led the Storm defense with 7 total tackles. Dezmin Reed recorded a sack and Trey Wafford had a fumble recovery.
The Storm will be at home for a second straight week, on May 12, with a 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m.). The Barnstormers will host their in-state rival Cedar Rapids Titans at home, on May 11 with a kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central).
