GREEN BAY WI - Javon Bell caught 10 passes and as pair of touchdowns as the Cedar Rapids Titans earned their third win of the Indoor Football season tonight at the Resch Center.
The win moved the Titans to 3-10 on the season and establishes a two-game win streak heading into the final week of the Indoor Football League season in week 17. the Blizzard, who held slim playoff hopes heading into the game, fell to 2-11 on the season. Both teams have been eliminated from playoff contention. The Iowa Barnstormers, Arizona Rattlers, Sioux Falls Storm and Nebraska Danger have earned playoff spots for 2018.
The opening quarter was lackluster. In fact, the score remained 0-0 at the end of the quarter.
Green Bay got on the board first with an 18-yard run from Kezlow Smith. Cedar Rapids came back with a seven-yard pass from Jake Medlock to Jordan Bell. The Titans led 7-6 going into the intermission.
The Titans went up 14-6 when Medlock found Bell or a 13-yard score with 7:53 left in the third quarter. Bryan Hicks' three-yard pass to Levi Copelin brought the Blizzard closer. Hicks hit Copelin for the two-point conversion to tie the game. Medlock's six-yard pass to Bell gave the Titans a 21-14 lead which extended to the end of the quarter.
The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter, starting with Jereme Jones' 32-yard touchdown run 32 seconds into the quarter. The Titans came back on a one-yard run from Marquel Wade. Serge Trezy tied the game at 27-27 with a three-yard run of his own. Cedar Rapids scored the winning touchdown with 4:33 remaining on Medlock's five-yard pass from Medlock to Wade.
Wade, the Titans' leading wide receiver, spent much of the game at running back to augment the passing game led by Medlock.
The Titans outgained the Blizzard in total offense, 257 yards to 184. They held a 201-yards to 71 edge in the passing game. Green Bay held an advantage of 113 yards to 56 in the ground game. Cedar Rapids was flagged 12 times for 58 yards, while Green Bay was penalized 4 times for 49 yards.
Medlock completed 24 of 36 passes for 209 yards with 4 touchdowns and an interception. Wade finished with 42 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown, and caught 5 passes for 21 yards and another score. Bell had 10 catches for 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jordan Smith had 6 receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown, while Connor Hollenbeck had 3 receptions for 34 yards. James Calhoun and Moses White paced the Titans' defense with 5 total tackles apiece. Calhoun also recorded an interception. Ricarlo Bell finished with 2 sacks and Timothy Hamilton had a sack.
Hicks finished 9 of 20 for 117 yards with an interception and a touchdown. Jones rushed 4 times for 51 yards and a touchdown, while Kezlow Smith and Serge Trezy scored rushing touchdowns. Kezlow Smith caught 2 passes for 22 yards. B.J. Hill and Andre McDonald each caught 2 passes for 25 yards. Josh Jenkins' 8.5 total tackles and sack led the Blizzard's defense, while Manny Asprilla recorded an interception.
The Titans close out their season with a trip to their in-state rival Iowa Barnstormers on June 16. Kickoff is set for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Blizzard will visit the Sioux Falls Storm on June 16. Kickoff in that one is slated for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 central).
