ANALYSIS
The Rattlers and the Danger have met just three times in the regular season, with the Rattlers winning all three games. The most recent was three weeks ago when the Rattlers held off a late Danger rally to emerge with a 45-40 win. In week 5 of this season, the Rattlers came away with a 62-49 win in Phoenix. The Rattlers won the first-ever meeting between the teams, 39-36, on April 7, 2017. Arizona also bested Nebraska in last season's Intense Conference Championship game by a 62-36 score. Prior to that week 14 game, the Danger released head coach Mark Stoute, and replaced him with interim co-head coaches Adam Schackleford and Cornelius "Pig" Brown. The two have thus far served as offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator, respectively. The Rattlers are helmed by Kevin Guy, who is in his 16th season as head coach of the team.
Arizona has already clinched a playoff spot and are looking to earn home field advantage in the first round (a.k.a. semifinals) and possibly in the United Bowl should they advance. They are locked into a three-way tie with the Iowa Barnstormers and Sioux Falls Storm. The Indoor Football League has yet to release its tiebreaker format in the event of a three-way tie. Two of those three teams will host opening round playoff games, while the third will be on the road in that round. The Rattlers won the season series over the Storm, 2-0, but have been swept this season by the Barnstormers, 3-0. Collectively among the three, the Barnstormers are 4-2, and the Rattlers and Storm are each 2-5.
Jeff Ziemba is second in the IFL with 39 touchdown passes and is completing 61.7 percent of his passes this season. Ziemba needs 268 passing yards in this one to reach the 2,000-yard mark this season. His 1,732 passing yards put him at third in the league. The Rattlers will have the services of their top two rushers. Veteran Darrell Monroe leads all running backs with 685 yards on the ground, and is first with 25 rushing touchdowns. Shadrach Thornton, who has appeared in just six games, has racked up 260 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Arizona features a talented trio of receivers. Jamal Miles has slightly emerged as the leader of the group with his 465 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. Veteran Anthony Amos averages 12.5 yards per catch to go along with his 17 touchdowns, and Dezmon Epps comes in with 13.8 yards per catch and 7 touchdowns. Arkeith Brown, another Rattlers veteran, leads the team with 57 tackles, 4 interceptions and 6 pass break ups.Joshua Fordon adds 4.6 sacks and 12 tackles for loss to go with his 48 total tackles. Chris McAllister has 3.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss, while Nathan Lindsey leads the team in pass break ups with 7. Sawyer Petre is among the best kickers in the IFL. He leads the league by converting 88.8 percent of his extra point attempts. He has hit 10 of 25 field goal attempts with a long of 41 yards. Eleven of those misses have come from 30 yards or further.
Nebraska has clinched the fourth seed in the playoffs. They are a single game up on the Cedar Rapids Titans in the standings, and won the season series over the Titans, 2-1. Typically, head-to-head records are the first determiner of a tiebreaker. The Danger have played the Rattlers touch this season, losing by 13 and five points in their two meetings. All three week 17 games take place simultaneously this weekend. The Danger have lost eight straight games after having starting the season 4-1. They've been through a coaching change and three starting quarterbacks this season. A win here could serve to put them back on track heading into a potential playoff game.
It's a bit of a question mark as to who will start at quarterback for the Danger. Gregory Hankerson, Jr. has started the past four games, but the Danger have re-signed Jesse Scroggins II. Scroggins was released five weeks ago, but remains the team leader in all passing categories. Hankerson is averaging 95.5 passing yards per game and has tossed 7 touchdown passes against just one interception. Where he does his damage is on the ground, where he is averaging 7.3 yards per carry and 67.2 yards per game. Scroggins went 2-6 as the starter. Angelo Pease averages 3.2 yards per rush and 25.5 yards per game. He also leads the team with 13 rushing touchdowns, and has caught 6 touchdown passes. Gregory Dent, Jr. has caught 54 passes for 531 yards and 10 touchdowns, and Kenzel Doe comes in with 36 receptions for 349 yards and 4 touchdowns. Eric Thomas, who leads the Danger in all major receiving categories, has not caught a pass in the past two games. Darion Monroe has 4.5 tackles for loss and 5 pass break ups to his team-leading 72.5 total tackles. Myke Tavarres has 67.5 total tackles along with 3 sacks and 9 tackles for loss. Xzavie Jacksonm, who leads the team with 4.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 3 fumble recoveries, has been on Short Term Injured Reserve, but is eligible to return, injury permitting. Brad Hatfield has made just 13 of 47 field goal attempts with 26 misses coming from 30 years or further. Hatfield hit his two longest field goals of the season, 43 and 47 yards, against the Rattlers three weeks ago.
