Michigan St. Spartans vs. Oregon Ducks
What: The Spartans and Ducks hook up in the Redbox Bowl.
When: Monday, Dec. 31 at 12 p.m.
Where: Levi's Stadium; Santa Clara, California.
Television: Fox.
Radio Stream: 750 The Game.
2018 Records: Spartans 7-5 (5-4 Big Ten). Ducks 8-4 (5-4 Pac-12 North).
Head Coaches (overall as HC): Spartans - Mark Dantonio (125-67); Ducks - Mario Cristobal (34-52).
Previous: These teams have met six times with each team wining three of those. The most recent match up was the Spartans' 31-28 win at East Lansing in 2015. The previous season, the Ducks posted a 46-27 win at Eugene in 2014. Michigan St. won the first game between the teams, 41-17, at home in 1979. The Spartans also defeated the Ducks, 27-20, at East Lansing, in 1999. The Ducks other wins in the series also came at home; 35-7 in 1980, and 48-14 in 1998. This is the first time the teams will meet on a neutral field.
Spartans Notes: Michigan St. has won six national championships, the most recent of which was in 1966. The Spartans have played in 27 bowl games and accumulated a 12-15 record. They are, however, 5-1 in their previous six bowls. They are coming off a 42-17 win in over Washington St. in last year's Holiday Bowl. Mark Dantonio is in his 12th season as head coach of the Spartans and has accumulated a 107-50 record with the team. He previously coached at Cincinnati. Starting quarterback Brian Lewerke is nursing an injured shoulder on his throwing arm. Lewerke, who completed 54 percent of his passes for 1,868 yards, may or not be ready for this game. Should he not be able to return, the offense will be in the hands of Rocky Lombardi, who completed 44 percent of his throws for 738 yards with three touchdowns and three picks. Connor Hayward gained 520 yards on 114 carries with five touchdowns to pace the Spartans' ground game. It's been pretty much receiving by committee for the Spartans this season, with Cody White leading the way with 36 catches for 491 yards and a pair of scores. Felton Davis III caught 31 passes for 474 yards and four touchdowns, and Darrell Stewart added 39 grabs for 368 yards and a touchdown. The stout Spartans' defense allowed just 18 points and 216 yards per game this season.
Ducks Notes: Oregon made it to the National Championship Game following th 2009 and 2014 seasons, but came up short both times. The Ducks have made it to a bowl game in 13 of the past 14 seasons. Their last bowl win was in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2015; a 59-20 win over Florida St. in the College Football Playoff Semifinals at the Rose Bowl. The Ducks fell to Boise St., 38-28, in last year's Las Vegas Bowl. Oregon's first bowl game was following the 1916 season in which they defeated Penn, 14-0, at the Rose Bowl. Overall, the Ducks are 13-17 in their bowl history. The Ducks offense revolves around quarterback Justin Herbert. This season, he went 221 of 371 for 2,985 yards with 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Speculation is that Herbert may enter the NFL Draft following this game. C.J. Verdell has been steady in the rushing game, gaining 975 yards on 188 carries with 10 touchdowns. Freshman Travis Dye added 134 carries for 721 yards and four touchdowns. Dillon Mitchell is one of the better receivers in the country. He finished the season with 69 receptions for 1,114 yards and nine touchdowns. Jaylon Redd had 31 catches for 368 yards and five scores, and Jacob Breeland added 22 catches for 351 yards and a touchdown. The Ducks' defense allowed 27 points and 324 yards per game this season.
Redbox Bowl Notes: This bowl game, under its first season with its current sponsor, has gone through several incarnations. It has previously been known as the San Francisco Bowl, Emerald Bowl, Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl and Foster Farms Bowl. The game was originally played at AT&T Stadium, the home of the San Francisco Giants. It was moved to Levi's Stadium when that venue was completed in 2014. Since 2014, the participants are comprised of teams in the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences. The NFL's San Francisco 49ers, of which Levi's Stadium is home, took over the management of the game in 2016. Neither Michigan St. nor Oregon has competed in this particular bowl.
