ANALYSIS
The mission is clear for the Barnstormers. They want to repeat as IFL champions. Dixie Wooten's group has a new look and will be search for their a replacement at quarterback. Last year's IFL Most Valuable Player, Drew Powell has departed for the Canadian Football League (a step up). There is talent on the roster, including some talented specialty position players and several returning defenders. Quad City looked strong in their week 1 IFL debut, especially in the second half in their 67-49 win over the expansion San Diego Strike Force. With nearly half of their roster coming over from last season's Champions Indoor Football squad, there is come built-in cohesiveness as they will seek to move to 2-0 on the young IFL season. Former Baltimore Ravens kick returner Cory Ross has coached the Steamwheelers in their now-two seasons of football.
As of this writing, no starter has been announced at quarterback for Iowa. Yianni Gavalas out of Long Island University Post and Daquan Neal of of Elizabeth City St. University battled during training camp. Jamal Tyler, who scored last year's United Bowl winning touchdown, leads the ground attack. The strength at offense will come from the wide receiving group. Ryan Balentine, who is fifth in IFL history with 4,358 receiving yards returns. His wideout mate, Brady Roland, is gone, but the team went out and signed Connor Hollenbeck, who was a major force in in the receiving game for last season's Cedar Rapids Titans (now the River Kings). There is a talented duo coming back at defensive back in Jourdan Wickliffe and Tyrell Pearson. Either one of them is capable of making the big play. Defensive lineman B.J. Butler is the stalwart on the line. Training camp rookies Akeem Barton, Izaah Burks, Reggie McGee, Trenton Thompson and Travonte Valentine will look to make their mark as well. During the off season, the Barnstomers signed kicker Nathan Criswell.
Veteran indoor quarterback E.J. Hilliard was the extremely efficient in the opener against the Strike Force. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed nine times for 61 yards and another two scores. Being a dual threat gives most players at the position a decided advantage while running the offense. Three other players rushed to the end zone last week, including two touchdowns each from Isaiah Neely and Darius Hicks. Carlos Wiggins made it to pay dirt once. Neely also caught three passes for 32 yards and a touchdown. Quinton Pedroza and Keyvon Rudd are Hilliard's primary weapons in the passing game. Defensive backs Keith Lewis and Everett Nicholas V make up a talented backfield which can cause problems for opposing receivers. Nicholas intercepted two passes last week. Linebacker Christian Jacobs and La'Kel Bass, and defensive lineman Kewan Alfred are charged with leading the pass rush. Kicker Jacob Stytz made all nine of his point after tries and his only field goal attend (41 yards) against San Diego.
