ANALYSIS
Even the casual fan would be hard-pressed to find two indoor/arena football teams which have consistently been perennial powerhouses. The Storm have appeared in nine straight United Bowls, and won six straight from 2011-2016. They nearly returned to the podium in 2018, but were thwarted by a last-minute touchdown in a 42-38 loss to the Iowa Barnstormers. The Rattlers won three straight Arena Bowls prior coming over to the IFL before last season. These two teams met in the 2017 United Bowl, with the Rattlers coming out on top, 50-41. The Storm toppled the Rattlers in last season's Intense Conference Championship game which went to overtime, 69-68 (Arizona had defeated Sioux Falls in both meetings during the 2018 regular season). All time, the Rattlers lead the series, 3-2, including 2-1 in the regular season. Both teams feature potent offenses, formidable defenses and opportunistic special teams. So, the stage is set; if there were ever a game to be noted IFL Game of the Week, this just might well be it.
Lorenzo Brown, Jr. had an outstanding game for the Storm in their win last week over the Quad City Steamwheelers; so much so that he was named the IFL Offensive Player of the week. The veteran quarterback rushed for six dozen touchdowns and threw for another four in the 14-point win. He completed 12 of 15 passes for 160 yards, while rushing for 83 yards off 17 carries. In fact, the performance might just be considered the individual performance of the season in the league thus far this season. On the season, he is completing 68.7 percent of his passes for an IFL fourth-best 150.8 yards per game. He has also tossed 10 touchdown passes and his 10 rushing scores is top for tops in the league. He has a strong support staff. Darrian Miller comes in with 44.5 yards per game rushing, along with four trips to the end zone. Miller also has nine receptions for 53 yards. Brandon Sheperd comes in with 18 receptions for 301 yards and four touchdowns, while Damian Ford has 13 catches for 202 yards and six scores. With stalwart defensive back Trey Wafford off to the AFL with the Atlantic City Blackjacks, the onus on the defense falls to DeAndre Scott and Matt McKoy. Scott leads the team with 23 tackles and an interception, and McKoy has 20 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception of his own. Charles Williams, Kanyia Anderson and Daelin Young have each recorded a sack. Williams also has 19 tackles, as does LB T.J. Neal. Miles Bergner is 25 of 29 on his extra point attempts (all four misses came last week) and seven of 10 on field goal tries with a long of 54 yards.
The Rattlers are loaded with weapons all through the roster. So far this season they have utilized both their quarterbacks, Verlon Reed, Jr. and Jeff Ziemba. These two are the previous two IFL Offensive Rookies of the Year, with Reed winning the honor in 2017 with the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles and Ziemba winning in 2018 with Arizona. While Ziemba's passing numbers are a bit better, Reed counters with an acute rushing ability. Reed is completing 70.8 percent of his passes for 292 yards with six touchdowns and an interception while boasting a 9.7-yard rushing average and five touchdowns. Ziemba comes in completing 77.8 percent of his passes for 196 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He has also scored two touchdowns on the ground. The emerging star of this offense, however, is RB Jabre Lolley. The rookie rusher leads the IFL with 78.7 yards per game and is third with nine touchdowns. He has hit the end zone in each of the Rattlers' three games on the season on the ground, and has four touchdown catches as well. Veteran Rattler Anthony Amos has seven catches for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Dezmon Epps, a threat in the kick return game, also has caught a pair of touchdowns. Ricky Wyatt, Jr. has 21 tackles and Davontae Merriweather enters the game with 19 and an interception. Joshua Gordon's five sacks are best in the league and Nikolaus D'Avanzo has recorded two. Four players have recorded interceptions. Jimmy Camacho is a sturdy kicker who has made 25 of 27 point after tries and has only attempted a single field goal.
