ANALYSIS
These teams met for the first time ever last week. Aside from high-flying offenses, it had all the defense and last-minute drama for which a team could have hoped. With the Steamwheelers leading 26-14 at the 1:00 warning of the second half, the Blizzard scored on a two-yard run from Rameses Owens with 55 seconds remaining. The Blizzard went for the line-drive onside kick, which was recovered by wide receiver Levi Copelin at the Quad City 19, and Green Bay was back in business down just five. Lenorris Footman hit Kezlow Smith on a 15-yard scoring strike with 12 seconds remaining which proved to be the game-winning score. Footman and Smith hooked up for the two-point conversion to put the game away, 29-26. This time these teams meet in Titletown, just a block away from Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. A win would put the Blizzard up two games on the Steamwheelers in the playoff race; essentially two games given that they would own the tiebreaker. A Steamwheelers win could clog the standings and possibly give them the tiebreaker depending on how the rest of the season turns out. At stake could be a bid to make the playoffs and, perhaps, even host a playoff game. This is the second of just two meetings between the teams this season. Green Bay has won two straight for the first time since May 2015 when they swept a home-and-away back-to-back over the Wichita Falls Nighthawks. Quad City is looking for its third win of the season and second win on the road.
The Steamwheelers are led by veteran quarterback E.J. Hilliard, who is second in the IFL with 168.2 passing yards per game and first with 20 touchdown passes. He also leads the team in rushing with 35.0 yards per game and three touchdowns through five games. Hilliard is the prototypical dual-threat indoor quarterback. Carlos Wiggins has emerged as not only a kick returner, but as a lead back. He is rushing for 5.6 yards per carry and has two touchdowns on the ground. He has a receiving touchdown on his 2019 resume and returned a kickoff for a touchdown last week against Green Bay. Quinton Pedroza, with his athleticism and leaping ability, has caught a league-high 11 touchdown passes, and has rushed for three. He has 22 receptions for 22 yards. Keyvan Rudd comes in with 20 receptions for 320 yards and seven touchdowns, which is tied for fourth in the IFL. Backup QB Dillon Turner is being utilized as of late as a rusher and receiver and scored his first rushing touchdown of the season. Defensive back Danzel McDaniel is third in the league with 9.5 tackles per game, with 48 on the season. Everett Nicholas V has two interceptions and Keith Lewis has one. Robert Jones' three sacks rank him third in the IFL, and Howard Stephens, Jr. has one of his own. Kenneth Rowe has struggled, especially last week, in place of original kicker Jacob Stytz, who is on short-term IR. Reports are that Stytz may make his return in this game.
The Blizzard rush for nearly as many yards as they pass per game. Their QB, Footman, is completing 45.1 percent of his passes for 534 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions on the season. What's more impressive is that he is rushing for an IFL fourth-best 58.0 yards per game and has six rushing touchdowns. Look for more of the same for the rookie in this one. Green Bay doesn't necessarily have a go-to rusher, but Rameses Owens will be featured in order to take some heat off Footman. Also look for B.J. Hill to get a few carries. Hill leads the receiving group with 15 receptions for 181 yards with three scores. Keshaun Taylor and Levi Copelin will also see some throws come their way as each has 130 receiving yards through the team's five games. Kezlow Smith should also figure into the mix and came up big with the game-winning touchdown catch last week against Quad City. Dayshawn Taylor leads the defense with 33 tackles, while Marquez Gollman and Joe Powell each come in with 29. Bakari Triggs leads the IFL with three picks, Gollman has a pair of interceptions. Powell and Isaiah Brown each have an interception as well. Truett Box is third in the IFL with 2.5 sacks, while Delrick Canty comes in with 2 and Teko Powell has 1.5. Green Bay leads the league as a team with eight interceptions on the season. Cody Barber has converted on 14 of 17 of his extra point attempts, and is five of 12 on field goal tries with a long of 40 yards.
