ANALYSIS
This is the second of a back-to-back between the teams, playing twice in eight days. The Barnstormers' smothering defense helped them put away the River Kings last week, 41-20. It was a solid win for the defending champions and helped them maintain their undefeated record. Iowa is tied with the Arizona Rattlers atop the standings at 4-0. With last week's game tied 10-10, Iowa went on a 17-0 run in the second and third quarters, and Cedar Rapids was never able to recover. These teams have an all-time head-to-head record of 6-6, but the Barnstormers have had the advantage over the past couple of seasons.. Cedar Rapids won the first six during 2015 and 2016, including a 93-56 victory on May 7, 2016 during Mark Stoute's first tenure with the team. Iowa has won six of the last seven. Cedar Rapids is one of only two teams to have defeated the Barnstormers during Iowa's 2018 run through the United Bowl Championship. The other was the Sioux Falls Storm, who topped the Barnstormers twice last year. Including the playoffs, the Barnstormers have won 14 of their last 15 games. The River Kings' only win of the season came at home over the expansion San Diego Strike Force back in week 3.
There is talent on this River Kings roster and it all starts under center. Kurt Palandech comes in with 129.2 passing yards per game, which is good for fifth in the league. He also has thrown for a fourth-best 13 touchdowns. He is completing 63.1 percent of his passes with just two interceptions. Palandech also is rushing for 39 yards per game and has hit the end zone twice on the ground. Nathaniel Chavious has a 4.7 yards per carry rushing average with six touchdowns. He and Kalif Phillips could see a heavy doze of carries in this game should the River Kings decide to play a ball control offense. Chavious also can be a factor in the receiving game. Marquel Wade is the featured receiver with his 25 catches for 286 yards. His seven touchdowns through the air are tied for fourth best in the IFL. Jordan Smith has 14 receptions for 144 yards and three touchdowns. The River Kings' defense is led by the 31 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three tackles for loss of LB Malik Slater. Travonti "Tuff" Johnson has 20 tackles and a fumble recovery and Jeff Branch come in with 3.5 tackles for loss. With Henry Nell signing with the Arena Football League's Baltimore Brigade this week, the River Kings have signed former Amherst College standout Phillip Nwosu as its new kicker.
Daquon Neal is third in the league in passing yards per game and touchdowns with 163.3 and 14, respectively. He's completing a league-high 80.3 percent of his passes and has yet to throw an interception through four games. Neal also can be dangerous on the ground, as he averages 50.8 yards per game and is tied for fifth with seven touchdowns on the ground. Jamal Tyler has 86 carries off 26 yards with four trips to the end zone. Ryan Balentine, who is the IFL active in receiving yards (4,692 coming into this game), has 30 receptions for 334 yards and eight touchdowns. His 83.5 receiving yards per game lead the league. Former Cedar Rapids Titan Connor Hollenbeck comes in with 17 catches for 211 yards and three scores.Jourdan Wickliffe's 9.3 tackles per game are fifth in the IFL. He also has two forced fumbles, an interception returned for a touchdown and a pass break up. Tevin Madison enters this game with 19 tackles. Desmond Radford also has an interception, along with a team-high two sacks, and Jajuan Harley also has recorded a sack. Nathan Criswell has hit on 19 of his 24 extra point attempts and four of five of his field goal tries with a long of 35 yards, which he hit last week against the River Kings.
