ANALYSIS
This first-ever meeting between the teams is the only IFL game this week featuring two teams coming off wins. The Sugar Skulls won Expansion Bowl II last week with a 51-31 decision over the San Diego Strike Force. Tucson scored the only points of the second quarter on two touchdown runs to take a 24-14 lead heading into halftime and put the game away in the fourth quarter to earn their third win of the season and remain a perfect 2-0 at home. The Danger were locked in a largely back-and-forth battle with the Bismarck Bucks last week, but outscored Bismarck 17-6 in the game's final 14 minutes to come away with the road win. Nebraska has the opportunity to even their record at 3-3 with a win. Former NFL star Marcus Coleman and IFL Hall of Famer Pig Brown line up on the sidelines as head coaches of the Sugar Skulls and Danger, respectively.
The Sugar Skulls run a two-QB offense, with either Jake Medlock or Matt Behrendt under center. They could feature both or either one. Medlock is completing 60.4 percent of his passes for 346 yards with seven touchdowns, while Behrendt comes in hitting 64.4 percent of his throws for 338 yards and nine touchdowns. Neither QB has thrown an interception. The latter has had more success rushing, averaging 35.3 yard on the ground per game. Each has rushed for two scores. Mike Jones, who scored twice last week against the Strike Force, is averaging 61.3 yards per game on the ground and has six touchdown runs. Brandon Sampson comes in with 16 receptions for 191 yards and three scores, while Donovan Rasberry has 15 catches for 141 yards and three touchdowns. Shaq Curenton has caught 11 balls for 180 yards and a team-high five touchdowns. Zach Allen leads a talented defense with 38 tackles, three sacks, six tackles for loss and an interception. Cam Gaddis and Dee Maggitt, Jr. have each intercepted two balls and Keith Jones, Jr. has recorded a pair of sacks. Diego Marquez has made 27 of 28 extra point tries. He is just one of nine on field goal attempts, but the make was from 45 yards out.
Nebraska will want to establish the run early. The Danger feature former Nebraska Cornhusker QB Tommy Armstrong, Jr., under center. He's had a nice start to the season, completing 61.5 percent of his throws for 526 yards with 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Armstrong leads the IFL in rushing touchdowns with 11 and his third in the league with 60.6 yards per game on the ground. Davante Sapp-Lynch (Marshawn's kid brother) comes in racking up 55.8 rushing hards and his tied for second in the league with 10 touchdowns. He also has 10 receptions for 75 yards. Eric Thomas leads the receiving group with his 16 grabs for 140 yards and four scores, while Gregory Dent, Jr. has caught nine passes for 109 yards and three scores. Tevaris McCormick should also figure into the passing game. Najee Bright's 25 tackles and fumble recovery lead the defense. Lavarious Varnado has 21 tackles and an interception, and Jason Baxter also has picked off a pass. Chris Martin leads the team in sacks with 2.5. With Jarod Haynes listed on injured reserve, the kicking duties will be handled by Jeremy Reynolds, who is five of seven on extra point attempts and one of three on field goal tries.
