ANALYSIS
The story of this game is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions. The visiting Barnstormers are the defending champions, undefeated and tied atop the IFL standings. They are allowing the fewest points per game (33.0) and third-fewest yards per game (224.4). They're building a strong resume for a repeat bid. The Bucks, in their first IFL season since moving over from Champions Indoor Football over the off season, are one of two winless teams through week 7. Their defense is allowing league-highs 58.8 points and 303.6 yards per game. Facing a powerhouse such as the Barnstormers, even in the friendly confines of Bismarck Events Center, is a tall order. Iowa pulled away from the Cedar Rapids River Kings for a 59-48 win, their fifth game of the season. Bismarck kept things close through the first half of their game last week at home against the Sioux Falls Storm, only to see Sioux Falls pull away in the second half, dealing the Bucks a 64-31 loss. Rod Miller will do what he can to get his troops ready for another one of the IFL's upper echelon teams.
Not only is it on defense where the Barnstormers are flourishing. They are a well-rounded machine on offense. Rookie Daquan Neal has become one of the better IFL quarterbacks. He ranks third in the IFL with 159.2 passing yards per game and has thrown a fourth-best 16 touchdowns. He's completing a league-high 78.7 percent of his passes and has tossed just a single interception this season. He also is second with 54.4 rushing yards and tied for third with 10 rushing touchdowns. Jamal Tyler is a solid rusher who takes some heat off of Neal in the rushing game with his 5.2 yards per carry and seven touchdowns on the ground. Ryan Balentine is one of the best in the business. The current active leader in receiving yards and touchdowns, he is leading the league this season with 76.0 yards per game and has nine touchdowns through the air. Connor Hollenbeck is a big target with excellent hands who should figure into the mix, as well as Jazeric Peterson, who caught a touchdown pass last week against Cedar Rapids. Jourdan Wickliffe is tops in the IFL with his 10.6 tackles per game. He also has three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and an interception which he returned for a touchdown. Desmond Raiford leads the team in sacks with two, and has an interception. Tyrell Pearson has a pair of interceptions on the season. The team has signed Tuskegee University's Dalton Hall to handle the kicking duties in this one.
While the Bucks have struggled this season, they have playmakers. They've utilized both of their quarterbacks for significant chunks of the team's games thus far, which has come with mixed results at times. Homer Causey has had the better exposure of the two. He's completing 51.6 percent of his passes for 391 yards with eight touchdowns and an interception. He also comes into this one rushing for 25.4 yards per game and has rushed for three touchdowns over the course of the season. John Gibbs is completing 43.1 percent of his throws for 392 yards with four scores and four picks. He's coming in with a 23.4 yards per game average and four scores on the ground. Some of the best talent on the Bucks roster comes from a pair of receivers who played for the Sioux Falls Storm last season. Mike Tatum is an excellent receiver and kick returner. He has 20 receptions for 54.4 yards per game and three touchdowns. He also has rushed for three scores. Brandynn Clark has tallied 14 receptions for 232 yards and a team-high five touchdowns. Frederick Abraham who caught five passes last week, fills out the group and can make a big play. Antwan Smith's 24 tackles lead the team, and has the defense's only interception. LaTreze Mushatt enters this game with a pair of sacks, and Stephon Hall has recovered a fumble. Blake Levin is nine of 14 on point after tries and four of 12 from field goal range with a long of 27 yards.
