ANALYSIS
With a plethora of back stories, this game should be turn out to be a fascinating one to watch. The Rattlers are a franchise which saw its first action in 1992. The Sugar Skulls are one of the IFL's two expansion teams. One of the majority owners of the Sugar Skulls is Kevin Guy, who is in his 16th season as head coach of the Rattlers. The teams are located less than a two-hour drive from one another. The script practically writes itself for this one. In their first meeting, the Rattlers had their way with the Sugar Skulls in their first meeting. Arizona outscored Tucson 56-21 in the final three quarters as they cruised to a 63-28 win in Phoenix. Last week the Rattlers set a franchise record in points last week with a 91-58 win over the league's other expansion team, the San Diego Strike Force. The Sugar Skulls dropped their second game of the season last week as they were unable to rally against the Nebraska Danger. The 53-47 loss put them at 3-2 on the season. A bright spot for Tucson is that this game will be played at home, where they are 2-0 on the season.
Jeff Ziemba was excellent in the win last week. Ziemba, last season's IFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, comes in with the league's second-highest completion rate at 74 percent. He's thrown for 463 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has rushed for four touchdowns on the season. The Rattlers have plenty of options in the running game, not the least of which is veteran Darrell Monroe, who returned last week from short-term injured reserve last week to rush for 64 yards off 10 carries and two touchdowns. Jabre Lolley, who is averaging 52.4 rushing yards per game, is tied for third in rushing scores with 10. Jamal Miles had a monster game against the Strike Force last week, catching five passes for 70 yards and four touchdowns, and rushing for a sixth score. Jarrod Harrington, with 16 catches for 185 yards with three trips to the end zone. Sheldon Augustine will also factor into the passing game. Davontae Merriweather has 37 tackles, two interceptions and a pair of fumble recoveries, and Ricky Wyatt, Jr. enters the game with 36 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Joshua Gordon leads the IFL with five sacks. Allen Chapman and Phillip Henry each have two interceptions, and Devin Cockrell and Dillon Winfrey each have a pick each. Jimmy Camacho has made 45 of 48 extra point attempts and one of two field goal tries.
The Sugar Skulls have been competitive in nearly every game this season. The one knock may be that all their of their wins have come against winless teams; twice against the Strike Force and over the Bismarck Bucks. A win in this game could be a signature victory in their first season. Matt Behrendt and Jake Medlock have combined for 855 passing yards and 18 touchdowns with just three picks. Behrendt comes in completing 62.1 percent of his passes, while Medlock is at 61.0 percent. They've thrown for 10 and eight touchdowns, respectively. Behrendt is averaging 37.2 yards and has three scores on the ground. Either or both could see time in this one. Mike Jones is rushing for 50.5 yards per game with nine touchdowns to his credit. The Sugar Skulls this week released their top two receivers, Brandon Sampson and Donovan Rasberry, who had combined for 36 catches for 401 yards and seven touchdowns. That leaves Shaq Curenton, who leads the team with five touchdown grabs to go along with his 13 receptions for 198 yards. Zach Allen's 9.4 tackles per game are good for fifth in the IFL. He also has three sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss and an interception through five games. Cam Gaddis and Dee Maggitt, Jr. each have a pair of picks, while Keith Jones, Jr. comes in with two sacks. Diego Marquez is 32 of 35 on his extra point attempts. He's made one field goal of 45 yards this season.
