ANALYSIS
This marquee week 9 contest is a rematch of last July's United Bowl. Several players from that game will show up again for this one; notably WR Ryan Balentine of the Barnstormers and QB Lorenzo Brown of the Storm. Others, such as the Barnstormer's QB Drew Powell, have moved on to the Canadian Football League. Former Storm WR Mike Tatum currently second in IFL history with 7,486 all-purpose yards, is now with the Bismarck Bucks. Enter Daquan Neal for Iowa, who seems to be a clone of Powell, is one of the top signal callers in the IFL. Meanwhile, Brandon Sheperd and Damian Ford have helped Sioux Falls stay on track. The Barnstormers are tied atop the IFL standings at 6-0 with the Arizona Rattlers and the Storm are a game behind at 5-1 with that only loss coming to the Rattlers three weeks ago in phoenix. The Barnstormers had no problem dispatching of the Bismarck Bucks last week in North Dakota. The Storm had a bye in week 8 after having routed the Bucks in Bismarck, 64-31, on April 6.
Neal has been excellent in replacing Powell. He's completing 73.1 percent of his passes for 157.2 yards, good for third in the IFL. He also is second in the league with 21 touchdown tosses, but has only thrown a pair of picks. Neal also rushes for 47.5 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jamal Tyler, who rushed for the game winner against the Barnstormers in the United Bowl, has seven rushing touchdowns and a score through the air on the season. Balentine continues to pile up the numbers with his IFL-high 43 receptions. He has 70.5 receiving yards per game and a league-high 13 touchdowns. Connor Hollenbeck is one of the better receivers in IFL history and comes in with 18 catches for 225 yards and three scores. Jourdan Wickliff leads the IFL with 57 tackles. He also has three tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown. Travonte Valentine and Desmond Raiford each have a pair of sacks. Tyrell Pearson is tied for the lead for defensive interceptions with four. Five different Barnstormers' players have intercepted a pass for Iowa. Nathan Criswell is on short-term IR, so Dalton Hall has been brought in to kick for the Barnstormers.
The Storm, fresh off a bye, are led by Lorenzo Brown, Jr and his 150.3 passing yards per game. He's fourth in that category and fifth with 16 touchdowns through the air. He's completing 64.2 percent of his passes and has thrown just three interceptions. Brown also rushes for 31.3 yards per game and has 10 touchdowns. Calen Campbell has come on strong the past two games, rushing 23 times for 143 yards and six touchdowns, as well as returning a kickoff for a score. Brandon Sheperd leads the IFL in receiving yards per game at 71.7. He has 24 catches along with six touchdowns. Damian Ford is fifth in the league with eight TD grabs to go along with 19 receptions for 295 yards. Leading tackler Matt McKoy is on short-term IR, so it will be up to T.J. Neal and DeAndre Scott to power the defense Neal comes in with 29 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, while Scot has 27 take downs along with an interception. The Storm also have activated former IFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Trey Wafford from AFL transfer. Miles Bergner is on short-term IR after suffering an injury two weeks ago in Bismarck, so the team has signed South Dakota St.'s Parker Douglass to fill in as kicker.
