ANALYSIS
It's a bit of an odd rivalry, but in two-and-a-half years, meetings between these teams have become contemptuous. While the Rattlers lead the series 5-0 overall (including once in the playoffs), the Danger seem to be poised to knock them off. They met in the final week of the season in 2018 with the Rattlers coming away with the 59-23 victory in Grand Island. Pig Brown will get his second crack at taking down Kevin Guy's group and is bound to have his troops ready. Nebraska opened up a 31-9 halftime lead last week over the Cedar Rapids River Kings and held on for the 24-point win. Arizona slithered into Sioux Falls and came away with a 63-50 win over the Storm. The Danger come in just a half game back of Green Bay for fourth place in the standings, but that's essentially 1.5 games back given that the Blizzard own the tiebreaker due to winning the season series 2-1. Fourth place would mean a home game in the first round of the playoffs. At 5-4, the Danger are in a good position to make the post season with five games to go in the regular season. The Rattlers are in the driver's seat in the standings. If they complete a perfect season undefeated, it will mean a bye in the opening round of the playoffs as well as home field advantage throughout the playoffs, including in the United Bowl should they advance. After having swept their season series over the Storm, this match up with the Danger is probably the biggest test of their remaining six games.
The Danger have put their fortunes on former Nebraska Cornhuskers' signal caller Tommy Armstrong, Jr., who owns several school passing records. Armstrong has completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 1,184 yards with 26 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He also is rushing for 57.0 yards per game. He and teammate Davonte Sapp-Lynch (Marshawn's kid brother) each have 16 rushing touchdowns; which ties them atop that league category. Sapp-Lynch has 75 carries for 286 yards to go along with those trips to the end zone, and he has caught 18 passes for 141 yards and a score. Eric Thomas comes into this one with 27 catches for 303 yards and seven touchdowns, while Gregory Dent, Jr. has 24 grabs for 281 yards and nine scores. Thomas was named IFL Special Teams Player of the Week last week after returning two kicks for touchdowns. Quincy Walden and Johnny Jackson likely will round out the group. Najee Bright leads the team with 36 tackles, and Brandon Roe is tied for the league lead in interceptions with five. Chris Martin leads the IFL with 6.5 sacks, and 12.5 tackles for loss. D'Vonn Brown has 3.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss, and Seyvon Lowry has 2.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss for the Danger defense. The Danger snagged recently released former Tucson Sugar Skulls kicker Diego Marquez, who made his debut in last week's win. Marquez made all nine of his extra point attempts, and nailed his only field goal try, of 51 yards.
Who to start at quarterback? Jeff Ziemba, who has been with the team through the past two seasons and was last year's IFL Offensive Rookie of the Year or recently signed Drew Powell, last seasons IFL Most Valuable Player. Ziemba is completing 67 percent of his throws for 921 yards with 20 touchdowns and three interceptions. He had 180 passing yards and six touchdowns in last week's win at Sioux Falls. Powell on the other hand Powell completed 68.1 percent of his throws for 1,604 yards with 34 touchdowns and four interceptions and. He led the IFL with 78.8 rushing yards per game and with 23 rushing scores. He led the Iowa Barnstormers to a win in last year's United Bowl. It's possible we see them both in this one. Three running backs are on the Rattlers' roster, but it's likely Roland Genesy, Jr. will get his third start. Jarrod Harrington is the go to receiver with his 34 catches for 426 yards and nine touchdowns, and Jamal Miles, who could see some carries out of the backfield, has 23 grabs for 265 yards and nine scores. Davonte Merriweather leads the team with 60 tackles and has three interceptions. Ricky Wyatt, Jr. has six sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss. Dillon Winfrey leads the team with four picks, while Allen Chapman and Phillip Henry have three apiece. Chris McAllister and Nikolaus D'Avanzo have 3.5 and three sacks, respectively. Jimmy Camacho is 59 of 69 on his extra point attempts and five of nine on his field goal tries with a long of 43 yards.
