ANALYSIS
As long as these IFL teams exist, they will forever be linked as the league's two 2019 expansion franchises. That, and their geographical proximity to one another, makes for a natural budding rivalry. It has been, to this point, one-sided. The teams have seen each other in two prior meetings this season; one in each's home arena. This third match up, 2019 Expansion Bowl III if you will, sees the Strike Force invade southern Arizona for this week 11 battle. The Sugar Skulls won their first IFL contest when they put away the Strike Force, 66-44, in week 2. Jake Medlock threw for four touchdowns, three to Shaquon Curenton in the win in San Diego. In the second meeting, Tucson San Diego to just 17 points in the second through fourth quarters as they emerged with a 51-31 win at home. Medlock threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, and Mike Jones rushed for 78 yards and two scores in the win. For the Strike Force, this is a battle for respectability. While not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs at this point, the prospect at a post-season bid is bleak. A win over their fellow expansion franchise could be a building block for this team as they look to finish strong in their inaugural season. The Sugar Skulls are very much in the playoff race. They are tied for the sixth and final playoff spot and a win here could help them down the stretch run. San Diego was on a bye last week after having being shutout by the Arizona Rattlers in the second half in a 52-14 loss in week 9. Tucson seemed poised to take down the defensing IFL champion Iowa Barnstormers last week before Iowa scored with just seven second left to secure a 61-58 win. Head coaches Burt Grossman of the Strike Force and Marcus Coleman of the Sugar Skulls are both former NFL players, which would seem to bring an interesting dynamic to this young series.
San Diego has turned its offense over to rookie quarterback Jihad Vercher, who has started the past two games for the team. He's completing 56.7 percent of his passes for 330 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has rushed for a touchdown. George Moreira, Jr. will be tasked with taking some pressure off Vercher. He has rushed 64 times for 180 yards and a team-leading eight touchdowns, and has appeared in all eight of the Strike Force's games this season. Marques Rodgers' 64.1 receiving yards per game are good for fourth in the IFL. He also is third in the league with 41 receptions, totaling 513 yards, and he has hauled in seven touchdown passes Rodgers leads the league in all-purpose yards with 1,303. Julian Stafford's 10 receiving touchdowns are fifth in the league; that comes off 32 catches for 429 yards. David Carter adds 23 catches for 279 yards and two scores. Mikell Mair leads the Strike Force defense with 35 total tackles and has 2.5 tackles for loss. Omar Cook, who has the defense's lone interception, also has 32 tackles and 10 pass break ups. Terrence Fullum has the team's only sack of the season, as well as five tackles for loss. Ernesto Lacayo has converted 38 of 40 extra point attempts and is seven of 17 on his field goal tries with a long of 51 yards.
After switching back and forth between Medlock and Matt Behrendt, the Sugar Skulls seem to have settled in on Medlock (though don't be surprised to see Behrendt take some snaps in this one). Medlock comes in completing 60.3 percent of his passes for 896 yards with 16 touchdowns and four picks. He's rushed for eight scores. Jones is one of the more dynamic rushers in the IFL. He leads the league with 61.4 rushing yards per game and is tied for third with 14 trips to the end zone. He also has 19 receptions for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Curenton has 25 receptions for 399 yards and is tied for fifth in the league with 10 touchdown catches. Rico Brown is the second option with his 17 catches for 214 yards and four touchdowns. The sugar Skulls defense is led by the 61 tackles, four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss of Zach Allen, Allen also has one of the team's six interceptions on the season. Keith Jones, Jr. has three sacks and five tackles for loss. Cam Gaddis adds four pass break ups and a pair of interceptions to the defensive effort. Dee Maggitt, Jr. has two interceptions, two pass break ups and two tackles for loss in six appearances this season. Josh Gable, who will be appearing in his fourth game with Tucson, has made 12 of his 13 extra point attempts and is two of six on field goal tries with a long of 45 yards.
