BREAKDOWN
It's deja vu all over again for these teams as this will be the second game between them in six calendar days. It also is the final of four meetings between the IFL's two expansion teams in 2019. As long as these teams exist in the league they will forever be linked as the league's two expansion franchises beginning play this season. Their geographical proximity to one another makes for a natural budding rivalry. It has been, to this point, decidedly one-sided. The teams have seen each other in two prior meetings this season; one in each's home arena. This third match up, 2019 Expansion Bowl IV if you will, sees the Sugar Skulls march into Southern California to meet the Strike Force for this week 12 battle. The Sugar Skulls won their first IFL contest when they put away the Strike Force, 66-44, in week 2. Jake Medlock threw for four touchdowns, three to Shaquon Curenton in the win in San Diego. In the second meeting, Tucson San Diego to just 17 points in the second through fourth quarters as they emerged with a 51-31 win at home. Medlock threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, and Mike Jones rushed for 78 yards and two scores in the win. Last week saw the Sugar Skulls jumping out to a 41-21 halftime lead and hold pace in the second half as they came away with a 54-34 win in Tucson. Jarid "Rico" Brown hauled in three touchdown catches to help lead Tucson to the win, while Victor Dean caught a pair of passes for 26 yards and a touchdown in San Diego's effort. For the Strike Force, this is a battle for respectability. While not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs at this point, the prospect at a post-season bid is bleak. A win over their fellow expansion franchise could be a building block for this team as they look to finish strong in their inaugural season. The Sugar Skulls are very much in the playoff race. Heading into this game, they hold the sixth and final playoff spot and a win here could help them down the stretch run. Head coaches Burt Grossman of the Strike Force and Marcus Coleman of the Sugar Skulls are both former NFL players, which would seem to bring an interesting dynamic to this young series.
Tucson spend much of the first half of the season switching back and forth between Jake Medlock and Matt Behrendt before settling on the former as the starter. However, Medlock suffered a leg injury and is uncertain for this game. That possible opens the door for Behrendt, who has completed 63 percent of his passes this season for 495 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. He's also rushed for five touchdowns. with a 5.0 yards per carry average. Mike Jones, who has 14 rushing touchdowns, is one of the better running backs in the week, but he did not see action in last week's win. If he is out, look for Shadrach Thornton to pick up the rushing load for the Sugar Skulls. Shaquon Curenton and Brown make for a formidable one-two punch. Curenton has 29 receptions for 528 yards and 11 touchdowns, while Brown comes in with 23 catches for 256 yards and seven touchdowns. Malique Belfort has caught three touchdown passes in as many games with the team. Linebacker Zach Allen solidifies the defense with 66 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and an interception. Keith Jones, Jr. has three sacks and six tackles for loss. Cam Gaddis has intercepted three passes and Dee Maggitt, Jr. has a pair of picks. Josh Gable is 18 of 21 on his extra point attempts and two of six on his field goal tried with a long of 45 yards.
With the departure of Derrick Bernard to Champions Indoor Football's Omaha Beef, San Diego has turned its offense over to rookie quarterback Jihad Vercher, who will be making his fourth start of the season. Vercher, who led the Strike Force to its only win of the season (week 8 over the Cedar Rapids River Kings), is completing 56.8 percent of his passes for 426 yards with six touchdowns and five picks. He also has rushed for a score. Workhorse George Moreira, Jr. leads the team in rushing with 68 carries for 195 yards and nine touchdowns. Moreira is also a threat out of the backfield with his 16 receptions for 123 yards and three scores. Marques Rodgers is fifth in the IFL with 60.9 receiving yards per game, and has seven touchdown grabs on the season. Rodgers also has rushed for four touchdowns. Julian Stafford has 33 receptions for 434 yards with a team-high 10 touchdowns, while David Carter comes in with 24 catches for 283 yards and a pair of scores. Leading tackler Mikell Mair has been released, so the defense is led by Omar Cook with his 33 tackles, 11 pass break ups and an interception. Terrence Fullum has recorded the team's only sack through nine games and leads the team with five tackles for loss, and Tyler Thornton also has an interception. Ernesto Lacayo has made 42 of 44 of his extra point attempts and seven of 18 of his field goal tries.
