TUCSON, AZ - It turns out the third time was not the charm for the Tucson Sugar Skulls.
The Arizona Rattlers opened up a double-digit lead in the first half and dominated in all three facets of the game to down the Sugar Skulls, 62-47, tonight at Tucson Convention Center. With the win, Arizona moved to a perfect 11-0. They already have clinched a home field advantage in at least the first round. Should they lose one or even none of their final three games, they will earn a bye in the first round and a home date in the semifinals.
This was the third of four meetings between the teams. The Rattlers won 63-28 on March 16 in Phoenix, and claimed a 55-41 victory on April 14 in Tucson. The Sugar Skulls will visit the Rattlers on June 8.
The Sugar Skulls fell to 6-6. They are in a four-way battle with the Green Bay Blizzard, Nebraska Danger and Quad City Steamwheelers for the final three playoff spots in the IFL this season.
The Sugar Skulls found the end zone on the opening drive of the game when Jeremiah Harris caught a low 13-yard pass from Jake Medlock. The Rattlers came right back two minutes later with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Drew Powell to Jamal Miles. After Tucson was forced to settle for a 40-yard field goal from Josh Gable, the Rattlers re-took the lead at 14-9 on an eight-yard pass from Powell to Miles.
Arizona added to that lead on Powell's 16-yard pass to Jarrod Harrington with 9:17 remaining in the second quarter. The Sugar Skulls pulled to within nine when Gable hit from 26 yards at the 3:19 mark of the quarter. However, Harrington returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to put Arizona up 28-12. Tucson drove down to the two-yard-line where Medlock lobbed a short pass to the end zone to Shaquon Curenton, who tipped the ball to himself in the back of the end zone with 11 seconds left in the first half. The Rattlers held a 28-19 lead at intermission.
The Rattlers went up 35-19 on the opening drive of the third quarter on Powell's 23-yard pass to Harrington. The duo connected later in the quarter on a one-yard pass which gave Arizona a 23-point lead. Medlock found Curenton for a 10-yard touchdown with 2:45 left in the third. Arizona's lead was 41-25 heading into the final stanza.
Powell rushed in from 13 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter to push the Rattlers' lead back up to 23, but Medlock found Harris for a 17-yard touchdown a little over a minute later to make the score 48-32. Powell used his feed again rushing through an open lane 11 yards. The Sugar Skulls scored on a seven-seven yard screen pass to Rico Brown, who ran it in around the left side. The Rattlers led 55-39 with 6:27 remaining in the game. Arizona extended that lead to 62-39 on Jabre Lolley's two-yard run. The Sugar Skulls added a score on Matt Behrendt's two-yard pass to Brown. Behrendt hit Curenton for the two-point conversion.
The Rattlers gained 305 yards of total offense to 227 for the Sugar Skulls. They had a 22-yard advantage in the passing game and 56 yards on the ground. Arizona was penalized 11 times for 76 yards while Tucson was flagged seven times for 45 yards.
Powell went 13 of 15 for 180 yards with five touchdowns, and rushed eight times for 83 yards and a pair of scores. Lolley had seven carries for 39 yards and a touchdown. Harrington finished with seven catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns, and Miles added four receptions for 56 yards and two scores. Arizona's defense was led by the six solo tackles of Phillip Henry, while Lance McDowdell recorded a sack.
Medlock finished 18 of 30 for 156 yards with five touchdowns. He also rushed 11 times for 54 yards. Harris was all over the action, catching nine passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Curenton had seven grabs for 54 yards and two touchdowns, while Brown added a pair of receiving scores.Micah Eugene, Jr. led the Tucson defensive effort with five solo tackles.
The Rattlers are in action next week as they visit the Cedar Rapids River Kings on June 1 with a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Sugar Skulls have their final bye of the season next week, but are back in action in week 16 when they visit these same Rattlers on June 8. Kickoff in that game is scheduled for 5 p.m. All times listed are pacific standard time.
