FINAL - Storm 60, Strike Force 7
6/1/19 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The outcome was never in question.
The Sioux Falls Storm opened up a 33-0 lead through the first 29 minutes and never looked back as they grounded the San Diego Strike Force, 60-7 tonight at the Denny Sanford Event Center. The win improved the Storm to 10-2 and set up a showdown next week with the Iowa Barnstormers (11-1) in what could turn out to be a bye in the first round of the Indoor Football League playoffs. Should the Storm win, and defeat the Bismarck Bucks (2-10) in the regular season finale at Sioux Falls, they would clinch the number two position in the standings. That would mean a bye and a home date in the semifinals. The Barnstormers can clinch the second spot with a win in that game regardless of what happens in their finale at home against the Nebraska Danger.
The Strike Force fell to 1-11 on the season with their only win coming against the Cedar Rapids River Kings, which fell to an identical 1-11 this season as they were shut out tonight against the Arizona Rattlers.
This was the first-ever meeting between the expansion Strike Force and the Storm.
Sioux Falls struck twice in the first quarter on a pair of Calen Campbell touchdown runs of 13 and 11 yards. Quarterback Lorenzo Brown, Jr. broke free for a 40-yard touchdown scamper late in the opening quarter and the Storm were up 21-0 at the end of the first.
They added to that on Nolan Saraceni's one-yard run with 9:28 left in the second quarter. Brown hit Brandon Sheperd for a four-yard touchdown with just over two minutes left in the first half. The Strike Force got on the board with 41 seconds left in the half on a two-yard run from quarterback Jihad Vercher. The Storm added a score when Brown found Sheperd for five yards with 10 seconds left in the half. Sioux Falls led 40-7 at the break.
Brown's five-yard touchdown to Kent Shelby increased the Storm's lead to 40 points early in the third quarter. Late in the quarter, Brown found Tra'Von Chapman for a 23-yard touchdown. Chapman is officially listed as the Storm's backup quarterback (to Brown), but has been utilized for the past several weeks as a receiver and rusher. The Storm were up 54-7 heading into the fourth.
Saraceni, appearing in his first game for Sioux Falls, scored on a 16-yard run midway through the final quarter to provide the final margin of 60-7.
San Diego's seven points turned out to be the third lowest scoring output by a team this season, behind Cedar Rapids' zero points tonight against Arizona and the Green Bay Blizzard's three points against the Barnstormers in week 3. The fourth lowest also occurred tonight; 10 by the Bismarck Bucks in a 31-point loss to the Blizzard tonight.
The Storm amassed 251 yards of total offense to 139 for the Strike Force. The teams were even at 84 yards apiece in the rushing game, but Sioux Falls had an advantage of 112 yards in the rushing game. San Diego was penalized 10 times for 80 yards, while Sioux Falls was flagged twice for six yards.
Brown finished eight of 12 for 79 yards with five touchdowns and a pick. He also rushed five times for 60 yards and an interception. Saraceni had 40 yards off 10 carries to go along with his two touchdowns. Campbell added a score each through the air and on the ground, and Sheperd had three catches for 21 yards with a pair of touchdown snags. Rick Rumph led the way for the Storm defense with eight tackles and an interception. T.J. Neal had three sacks and four tackles for loss. Claude Davis also had three sacks to go along with three tackles for loss. Charles Williams added a sack and fumble recovery to his three tackles for loss. Keiron Williams and Pete Swenson each also had a sack.
Jihad Vercher went 13 of 23 for 112 yards with a pick. He rushed seven times for 21 yards with the team's only touchdown on the night. Marques Rodgers caught six passes for 67 yards, and Dominique Carson added four grabs for 30 yards. Omar Cook's six tackles led the San Diego defense. Tareq Abulebbeh had a pick and Terrence Fullum recorded a sack.
The Strike Force will host the Nebraska Danger on July 6 with kickoff scheduled for 7:05 p.m. That game was moved this week from its original date of July 7. The Storm will visit the Iowa Barnstormers in what could determine the second seed and a bye in the opening round of the playoffs.
