BREAKDOWN
Nebraska is still in the hunt for one of the two final playoff spots in the Indoor Football League, as it heads into the second-to-last week of the regular season. However, the Danger will need to win and get some help. They own the tiebreaker over the Tucson Sugar Skulls (6-6) due to their 53-47 win over Tucson in week 7. On the other hand, they would lose a tiebreaker to the Quad City Steamwheelers due to their 53-47 overtime loss to the Steamwheelers on May 24. A win over the Strike Force puts them in somewhat in a due-or-die situation as they visit the Iowa Barnstormers (11-1) in the season finale. The Sugar Skulls play at the undefeated Arizona Rattlers this week and host the Steamwheelers in week 17. The Steamwheelers host the Bismarck Bucks this week before that season-ending match up at Tucson. The Strike Force have had a rough inaugural season of indoor football. That is probably most evident by their 60-7 loss to the Storm at Sioux Falls. They've been competitive at times this season, but have had difficulty putting together a complete contest in all facets of the game. They will look to bring some respectability to San Diego as they attempt to play spoiler in this game against the Danger. After this one, the Strike Force make a visit to Phoenix to take on the Rattlers in their season finale. This is the first-ever meeting between the teams, and the home finale for the Strike Force.
The Danger, who are coming off a bye, have been on the receiving end of late game losses against the Storm and the Steamwheelers. Former Nebraska Cornhusker Tommy Armstrong, Jr. has started every game this season for the Danger. His 129.7 passing yards per game are fifth in the AFL and he is fourth with 34 touchdown tosses. He is completing 60.1 percent of his passes and had thrown nine interceptions on the season. Armstrong leads the league with 55.7 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground this season. Davonte Sapp-Lynch comes in fifth with 40.9 yards and third with 13 touchdowns in those categories, respectively. Already loaded at the receiver position, the team signed the IFL's all-time all-purpose yards leader, Mike Tatum (7,929 yards), on March 24 after he was released the previous day by the Bucks. He joins the group led by Eric Thomas' 35 receptions for 404 yards and 10 touchdowns. Gregory Dent, Jr. is not far behind with 34 catches for 388 yards and 11 scores. Sapp-Lynch and Quincy Walden should also figure in to the mix on the receiving end of Armstrong's throws. Chris Martin leads the IFL with 8.5 sakcs and 16.5 tackles for loss to go along with 42 tackles, three pass break ups and a pair of blocked kicks. Brandon Roe is an opportunistic defender who leads the team with five interceptions. D'Vonn Brown comes in with 4.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss, while Seyvon Lowry has 3.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. Diego Marquez will appear in his fifth game for the Danger. He has made 20 of 24 extra point attempts and five of 10 field goal tries with a long of 51 yards for the team.
Despite their struggles this season, the Strike Force have been in several games this season into the fourth quarter. Jihad Vercher will make his seventh start of the season, making his first in the team's lone win of the season, 40-34 over the Cedar Rapids River Kings on April 14. Vercher is completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 862 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He is second on the team with 172 rushing yards off 57 carries with three touchdowns. Dominique Carson is likely to see some carries in this game as well as leading running back George Moriera, Jr. being placed on season ending IR on June 4. Both are also utilized in the passing game out of the backfield. Marques Rodgers, who is featured in the kick return game, is fifth in the IFL with 58.8 receiving yards per game. He also has eight scoring grabs this season, as well as five rushing touchdowns. Julian Stafford leads the team with 12 touchdown receptions to go along with 40 receptions for 531 yards. David Carter rounds out the group with 25 catches for 291 yards with three touchdowns. Rashad Ridley and Victor Dean, Jr. could also see some targets in this game. Omar Cook has 58 tackles 12 pass break ups and an interception for the defense. Tyler Thornton also has a pick. Terrence Fullumhas recorded two sacks and six tackles for loss. Mikell Mair adds 40 tackles and a pair of forced fumbles to the Strike Force's defensive effort. Ernesto Lacayo is one of the best in the indoor kicking business. He leads the IFL by converting 97 percent (58 of 60) on extra point attempts and is nine of 24 on field goal tries with a long of 53 yards.
