BREAKDOWN
The Bucks are looking for some respectability after scoring just 10 points in a 31-point loss to the Green Bay Blizzard last week. They have a challenge at quarterback where John Gibbs missed last week's game after being injured the week prior Running back Diantae Thomas started last week and was replaced by Tasleem Wilson, but Thomas came back in the second half. Who starts under center in this game is probably anyone's guess. If Gibbs, who as of this writing has not been put on short term IR, is available, he will undoubtedly get the start. If not, the Bucks could turn back to Thomas or give Wilson a full week of reps to prepare him for this game. It's much of a stay tuned situation at this point. The Steamwheelers can pretty much punch their ticket to the IFL playoffs with a win here. They possess an identical 5-7 record with the Nebraska Danger heading into the weekend and are just a game behind the Tucson Sugar Skulls for the two remaining playoff spots between the teams. Quad City, which has already defeated Tucson this season, can ultimately clinch a playoff berth when it visits Tucson next week in the season finale. The Sugar Skulls visit the Arizona Rattlers this week and finish out their season with that home contest against the Steamwheelers. The Danger visit the San Diego Strike Force on June 6 and close out their season with a road meeting with the defending champion Iowa Barnstormers on June 15. The final two playoff spots are definitely in flux and, the short answer is that with a pair of wins in their final two games, the Steamwheelers are likely headed to the post season in their first season in the IFL. The first meeting between these teams was one of the best in the IFL this season. After E.J. Hilliard's 42-yard touchdown pass to Keyvan Rudd put the Steamwheelers up 48-43 with 16 seconds left, Gibbs hit Eric Lauderdale for a 25-yard touchdown 10 seconds later. Gibbs' two-point conversion pass to Frederick Abraham made the final score 51-48. Both teams moved from Champions Indoor Football during the off season. They met twice last season in the CIF; their only previous historical meetings. The road team won both games last year, with the Bucks claiming a 44-42 win on March 23, 2018 in Moline, and the Steamwheelers winning 45-32 in overtime on May 5, 2018 in Bismarck.
As mentioned previously, it's a question mark as to who will line up under center for the Bucks. Gibbs is still on the active roster. He has completed 48.7 percent of his passes for 915 yards with 13 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He is the team's leading rusher with 60 carries for 301 yards and a team-high 12 touchdowns on the ground. Thomas is 12 of 18 for 56 yards with a score and a pick. he also has recorded 17 tackles. Recent signee Tasleem Wilson completed two of eight throws for 56 yards and a pick. Thomas is the main threat at running back should he not be the team's starting quarterback. Frederick Abraham leads the receiving group with 34 catches for 365 yards and seven touchdown grabs. Lauderdale has four touchdown grabs off 13 receptions for 132 yards. Recently signed Juwan Lewis could see some targets in this one. Lynn Williams has 51 tackles for the Bucks' defense, as well as nine pass break ups and a pair of fumble recoveries. Bismarck has only two defensive interceptions, and LaTreze Mushatt has recorded the team's only two sacks on the season. Cody Barber will appear in his seventh game with the team. He is 16 of 24 on extra point attempts and six of 18 on field goal tries with a long of 45 yards.
The Steamwheelers rely heavily on the passing game, but they have run the ball better in the second half of the season. E.J. Hilliard leads the IFL in passing with 193.8 yards per game and 50 touchdown passes. He is completing 62.3 percent of his passes. He also rushes for 32.3 yards per game with 12 trips to the end zone. Zavier Steward, who was signed mid-season, has seen rushing touchdowns to go along with 44 carries for 154 yards. The Steamwheelers are stacked at receiver; starting with Quinton Pedroza's 65.7 yards per game and 23 touchdown grabs; both ranking second in the league. Keyvan Russ is right behind in third in the with league 64.3 yards and is tied for fourth with 15 touchdowns. Carlos Wiggins, the Steamwheelers' featured kick returner, is explosive on offense with his 22 catshes for 332 yards and seven touchdowns. Danzel McDaniel is second in the IFL with 86 tackles and has 4.5 tackles for loss. Robert Jones Jones in with six sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss; the latter of which is second in the league. La'Kel Bass is sixth in the league with 73 tackles. Jacob Stytz has been solid all season, albeit despite the three games he missed due to injury. He is 49 of 58 on extra point attempts and six of 14 field goal tries with a long of 41 yards.
