SAN DIEGO, CA - The Nebraska Danger converted four turnovers into 28 points and kept their playoff hopes alive with a 54-26 win over the San Diego Strike Force tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
The Danger move to 6-7 on the season and are temporarily are in the sixth spot on the playoff race, a half game up on the Quad City STeamwheelers, who will line up at home against the Bismarck Bucks on June 7. If the Danger and Steamwheelers finish with the same record, Quad City will own the tiebreaker due to its 53-37 overtime win over Nebraska on May 24.
This was the season finale at home for San Diego, which fell to 1-12 with one game to go in their expansion season.
Nebraska scored first when Seyvon Lowry scooped up a fumble and returned it 12 yards for the touchdown. San Diego came right back on an 11-yard touchdown strike from Jihad Vercher to Victor Dean, Jr. Ernesto Lacayo's extra point try was blocked, leaving the Danger with a 7-6 lead with 2:40 left in the fourth quarter. Davonte Sapp-Lynch returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards for a touchdown and the Danger led 14-6 at the end of the opening quarter.
Dominique Carson's 21-yard run on the first play of the second quarter drew the Strike Force back to within a point with 14:40 remaining in the quarter. The Danger scored 21 straight points to close out the half. Tommy Armstrong, Jr. rushed in from two yards with 9:02 left in the second. Almost five minutes later, the Danger went up 28-13 on a one-yard run from Armstrong. Nebraska scored again on Armstrong's 20-yard pass to Eric Thomas. After the kickoff, the Lacayo lined up for a 52-yard field goal try which was short and returned by Thomas. After a series of laterals, Thomas got the ball back and reached the end zone. However, a trio of penalties by the Danger wiped out the score. Nebraska led 35-13 at the intermission.
The Danger capitalized on three first half Strike Force turnovers which resulted in 21 points for Nebraska in the half.
After recovering a Danger fumble, the Strike Force pulled to within 35-20 on a four-yard touchdown run around the left side from Marquez Rodgers. The Danger added a 45-yard field goal from Diego Marquez midway through the third quarter. Sapp-Lynch's one-yard run as time expired in the quarter to give the Danger a 45-20 lead at the end of three.
The teams traded defensive stops to start the fourth quarter before the Danger went up 52-20 on a nine-yard run from Sapp-Lynch with 4:33 to go. The Strike Force answered on Vercher's eight-yard touchdown strike to Julian Stafford. Vercher was called for intentional grounding on a pass from the end zone, resulting in a safety with 21 seconds left.
The Strike Force outgained the Danger in total offense by a yard, 177 to 176. The Danger had a 37-yard advantage in the rushing game, while the Strike Force held a 38-yard edge in the passing game. San Diego was penalized seven times for 122 yards and Nebraska was flagged eight times for 98 yards.
Armstrong finished 10 of 17 for 102 yards with a touchdown through the air and two on the ground. Sapp-Lynch added 11 rushes for 53 yards with two touchdowns to his kickoff return for touchdown. Eric Thomas had four catches for 33 yards and a touchdown. Luke Stice was all over the field for the Danger defense, recording 14 tackles. Lavarious Varnado and Gregory Dent, Jr. each tallied an interception.
Vercher went 15 of 29 for 140 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of picks. Carson, who made his first start for the Strike Force at running back, had 10 carries for 44 yards and a score. Julian Stafford caught four passes for 49 yards and a score, and Marques Rodgers added a rushing touchdown to his five receptions for 39 yards. Dean's touchdown catch was his third of the season. Ralph Harvey, Shaine Boyle and Robert Caldwell each finished with seven tackles for San Diego.
The Danger will close out their regular season on June 15 when the visit the Iowa Barnstormers for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Strike Force's season finale is also June 15, when they visit the Arizona Rattlers. Kickoff in that one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific standard time.
