BREAKDOWN
The Indoor Football League's two teams which did not qualify for the playoffs last season have had opposite campaigns from one another in 2019. The River Kings started out strong going toe-to-toe with the perennial powerhouse Sioux Falls Storm, falling by a field goal as time expired in their opening game of the season. A week 3 win over the San Diego Strike Force had many wondering if Cedar Rapids may be in the upswing. Since then, things have not looked so good for the River Kings, as they have dropped 10 straight. They've gone through three quarterbacks this season and it is unknown which of the two left on the active roster will get the call in this one. Still, the team is playing for pride and will look to close out their season with a win over the rival Blizzard. Green Bay, on the other hand, has enjoyed a resurgent 2019 after finishing last season with an IFL-worst 2-12 record. The Blizzard, at 8-5 are already locked into the fourth spot in the IFL playoffs regardless of a win in this game or any other result around the league in week 17. The improvement makes Corey Roberson a leading candidate for Coach of the Year. Roberson, who has a career record of 10-12, took over as interim head coach after five games this season and was named permanent head coach after the conclusion of last season. With their playoff fate already determined, it may be possible that Roberson may seek to rest some of players for a portion of this game if given the opportunity. In just his second game, running back Anthony Philyaw rushed for 88 yards and four touchdowns (all in the first half) to lead the Blizzard past the River Kings last week. It was the first meeting between the teams this season. Cedar Rapids leads the all-time series between the teams, 12-8.
Either Ben Wilkerson or Dalton Oliver will get the start under center for the River Kings. Each has had mixed success this season. Wilkerson has completed 44.2 percent of his passes for 244 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions this season, which includes three starts. He is rushing for 26.3 yards per game and has hit the end zone twice. Oliver, more of a traditional pocket passer, has started the past two games. He comes in having completed 46.9 percent of his throws for 277 yards with four touchdowns and three picks. Nathaniel Chavious has appeared in all 13 of his team's games this season and has gained 399 yards off 110 carries with 13 touchdowns. He also is a threat out of the backfield with 20 catches for 162 yards. Marquel Wade was the team's leading receiver with 54 receptions for 544 yards and eight touchdowns, but is listed as Refuse to Report. Jordan Smith comes in with 41 catches for 414 yards and eight touchdowns, and Drake White has caught 21 passes for 216 yards and six scores. Receivers Bryan Miller and Sean Malafronte hae been signed for this last game of the season. Nick Brassell leads the way for the River Kings defense with 47 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and three pass break ups. Jeff Branch's two tackles and 11.5 tackles for loss lead the team. Branch also has forced and recovered three fumbles. Samuel Mabany has recorded 2.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery in just three games with the team. James Kazalski, who appeared in his first game with the River Kings last week, missed an extra point attempt and had another blocked. He was one of three on field goal attempts with the make being of 28 yards.
Lenorris Footman has improved in every game this season. He has been reliable all year running out of the quarterback position, but has passing has gotten better from February to June. He's completing 54.9 percent of his passes and his 145.2 yards per game ranks fourth in the IFL. He's thrown 31 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. Footman is the league's leading rusher (among qualifiers) at 54.5 yards per game and has 17 touchdowns. Anthony Philyaw has come on as the team's running back, rushing for 146 yards and five touchdowns in his two games with the team. The Blizzard feature a quartet of talented receivers. They are led by Keshaun Taylor's 50 receptions for 605 yards and 12 touchdowns. Kezlow Smith and B.J. Hill and Kezlow Smith have each caught 33 passes for 450 and 397 yards, respectively. Smith has 10 scoring grabs and Hill has six. Levi Copelin rounds out the foursome with 26 receptions for 297 yards and four scoring grabs. Green Bay's defense is one of the best in the IFL, Led by Dayshawn Taylor with 75 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss. Silverberry Mouhon has tallied four sames and 10.5 tackles for loss. Teko Powell adds four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Bakari Triggs leads the team with five interceptions and nine pass break ups, and Joe Powell has a pair of interceptions to go along with six tackles for loss. Marquez Gollman and Heath Harding each have a pair of picks. Derek Vacha will appear in his third game for Green Bay. He has hit on 11 of 13 extra point attempts and both of his field goal tries with a long of 42 yards.
