BREAKDOWN
To say the Bucks have had a disappointing first season in the Indoor Football League may be an understatement. They started the season 0-6 before posting a 40-25 win over the Cedar Rapids River Kings in week 8. Their signature win of the season came the following week with a thrilling 51-48 victory at home over the potentially playoff-bound Quad City Steamwheelers. Bismarck has dropped its last five games and would love nothing more than to post a quality win on the road over the perennial powerhouse Storm. Sioux Falls is already locked in as the number three seed and will host a first round playoff contest against the Steamwheelers, Nebraska Danger or Tucson Sugar Skulls. The Storm have swept the Steamwheelers and Danger in two-games each this season. They've not played the Sugar Skulls. The Storm are looking to get back to the United Bowl for the 10th consecutive season, including a span from 2011 to 2015 when they won six straight IFL titles. These teams have met two previous times this season; both at Bismarck. On March 16, the Storm opened up a 44-0 halftime lead and rode it to a 52-18 victory. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. threw for 167 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for another in the win. On April 6, Brown threw for 213 yards and five touchdowns, and Caleb Campbell rushed for 110 yards and four scores, in a 63-31 Storm win. Frederick Abraham had five catches for 60 yards in the effort for the Bucks.
Four different quarterbacks have started this season for the Bucks. The most successful was John Gibbs, who engineered the team to its two wins. Gibbs was injured three weeks ago and, while on the active roster, has not seen action since. That could mean another appearance under center from Tasleem Wilson who would be making his second start. Wilson has completed 51.4 percent of his passes for 214 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in his two appearances with the team. Diantae Thomas and Juwan Lewis would be likely to see the bulk of the carries out of the backfield. The Bucks' receiving group has been in flux this season. With an injury to Brandynn Clark, and the departures of Mike Tatum and Alex Wheat, Jr., Abraham has become the go to receiver. He caught five passes for 94 yards and three touchdowns in the Bucks' loss last week to the Steamwheelers. Abraham has 39 receptions for 459 yards and 10 touchdowns on the year. Eric Lauderdale, with 14 catches for 146 yards and four scores, is the next option. Ricardo Johnson and defensive back William Gibbs are likely to see the remaining targets in the passing game. Lynn Williams has 53 tackles a pair of fumble recoveries and nine pass break ups. LaTreze Mushatt's 9.5 tackles for loss and two sacks lead the team. Jammeron Johnson has 5.5 tackles for loss and Paul Dodson adds 4.5 of his own. Brandon Henrie comes in with nine pass break ups. Cody Barber has made 18 of 27 extra point attempts and six of 20 field goal tries with a long of 45 yards this season for Bismarck.
After winning six straight United Bowls, the Storm have lost the past two. Being locked in as the third seed, it's uncertain if head coach Kurtiss Riggs will choose to rest a couple key players in this one. Brown's 155.2 passing yards and 42 touchdowns are third in the league in both categories. He comes in completing 62 percent of his passes and has thrown nine picks. He has rushed for 516 yards off 131 carries and has an IFL fourth-best 19 rushing touchdowns. Backup QB Tra'Von Chapman, who has been used in the passing game the past several weeks, could see some time if Riggs chooses to rest Brown for at least part of this game. Calen Campbell, who likely will see time as a kick returner, rushes for 5.5 yards per carry with 12 trips to the end zone. Sioux Falls features talent at receiver as Brandon Sheperd ranks fourth in the league with 61.0 receiving yards per game and 16 touchdowns. Kent Shelby has 39 grabs for 477 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Damian Ford has caught 30 passes for 497 yards and a dozen scores. T.J. Neal has 71 tackles to go along with 3.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. Claude Davis leads the team with 5.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss, and Charles Williams adds three sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss. Rick Rumph, Tre Dickerson each have a pair of picks. Parker Douglass is the IFL all-time leading scorer, coming into this game with 864 points over his career. He has made 37 of 44 extra point attempts and eight of 14 field goal tries with a long of 53 yards.
