GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard wanted their ninth win of the season, and left no doubt.
The Blizzard dominated in all facets of the game as they dispensed of the Cedar Rapids River Kings 47-0 tonight at the Resch Center. Green Bay finishes the regular season 9-5 and will host the Nebraska Danger, which earned a playoff spot with a 46-40 win tonight over the Iowa Barnstormers at Des Moines.. Green Bay will make its first playoff appearance since 2012.
The playoff match up against the Danger will be held on June 21 at 5 p.m. pacific standard time.
The River Kings ended a disappointing season at 1-13. Their lone win game in week 3 over the expansion San Diego Strike Force. It is the second time in three weeks that Cedar Rapids was shut out, and the first time in Indoor Football League history that a team has been shut out twice in one season. Prior to this year, the previous shut out came in Cedar Rapids when the then-Titans defeated the Bemidji Axemen 48-0 on June 13, 2015. Mark Stoute, who is in his second stint as head coach in Cedar Rapids, was the team's head coach in that game.
The Blizzard scored on a one-yard run from Antony Philyaw midway through the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead which would extend through the end of the first.
They extended the lead to 13-0 with 8:33 left in the second when Lenorris Footman drilled a touchdown Strike to B.J. Hill, who was activated off the short term injured reserve list three weeks ago. Cedar Rapids attempted a long field goal later in the quarter, but it was blocked by Green Bay's Teko Powell and recovered by Silverberry Mouhon in the end zone. Mouhon recovered a fumble on the next Cedar Rapids drive. Footman's eight-yard touchdown to Levi Copelin put the Blizzard up 27-0 with just under two minutes left in the contest. Green Bay added a score on a 14-yard pass from Footman to Kezlow Smith with 15 seconds left in the first half. The Blizzard held a 33-0 lead at intermission.
Green Bay added a score on a two-yard run from Philyaw early in the third quarter. The Blizzard led 39-0 heading into the final quarter.
The Blizzard added their final score of the game when Hill returned a missed field goal 38 yards for the touchdown with 14:20 left in the game.
Green Bay gained 181 yards of total offense to 49 for the River Kings. The Blizzard had a 87-yard edge in the passing game and a 45-yard edge in the rushing game. Each team was penalized six times, the River Kings for 36 yards and the Blizzard for 69 yards.
Footman completed seven of 10 passes for 80 yards and three touchdowns. Philyaw gained 32 yards off 12 carries with two scores. Smith caught five catches for 51 yards and two scores. Joe Powell led the Blizzard with seven tackles and a fumble recovery. Mouhon added a sack and fumble recovery to his five tackles.
Ben Wilkerson and Brandon Napoleon combined to go 4 of 11 for 39 yards and trio of interceptions. Jeff Branch, listed as a linebacker for the River Kings, caught four passes for 39 yards. Lazari Middleton finished with six solo tackles and Samuel Mabany had a sack for the Cedar Rapids defense.
