DES MOINES, IA - Davontae Sapp-Lynch's two-yard touchdown run with four seconds left put the Nebraska Danger into the playoffs.
Sapp-Lynch, the kid brother to the National Football League's Marshawn Lynch, completed the comeback to send Nebraska into the post season for the seventh straight season. The Danger rallied in the fourth quarter to take down the Iowa Barnstormers, 46-40 in the regular season finale tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
Nebraska will visit the Green Bay Blizzard on June 21 at 5:05 p.m. The Blizzard won two of the three meetings between the teams this season. All three games were decided by seven points or less. Under first-season full head coach Pig Brown, the Danger finished with a 7-7 record and claimed the fifth seed in the Indoor Football League season.
The Barnstormers, whose only previous loss was a 36-32 defeat to the Sioux Falls Storm, had already earned a first round bye in the playoffs. They will await the winner of one of the two first round match ups to see who they will host in the United Conference Championship game on June 28 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. pacific standard time.
The teams split their season series, 1-1, with each winning at the other's home venue. Overall they are 5-5 in their head-to-head history.
Nebraska struck first on an eight-yard sweep from Eric Thomas, but the Barnstormers responded with Daquan Neal's 13-yard pass to Ryan Balentine with just over 10 minutes left in the opening quarter. Nathan Criswell's extra point try was no good. Diego Marquez's 22-yard field goal extended the Danger's lead to 10-6 with 5:06 to go in the quarter. Neal hit Peterson for a nine yard touchdown four minutes later and the Barnstormers led 13-10 after one.
Sapp-Lynch's 17-yard run early in the second quarter put the Danger up by four. Iowa came back with a seven-yard run from Malik Brown with 4:40 left in the first half. A 16-yard touchdown from Tommy Armstrong, Jr. to Mike Tatum game the Danger a 24-19 lead with 3:26 left in the half. Tatum, a former member of the Sioux Falls Storm and Bismarck Bucks, was appearing in just his third game with Nebraska. Iowa came back and scored as time expired when Neal hit former Cedar Rapids Titan Connor Hollenbeck for a four-yard touchdown. The Barnstormers went into halftime with a 26-24 lead.
Iowa extended that lead early in the third quarter on Hollenbeck's five-yard touchdown from Neal. The Danger pulled once again to within two point on a seven-yard run from Armstrong. Neal's one-yard touchdown rush put the lead back to nine points at 40-34 at the end of the third quarter.
The Danger had both of the scores in the fourth quarter. Armstrong found Tatum for 13 yards. The Danger defense showed up big with Brandon Roe's interception of Neal. That allowed Armstrong and the offense to go to work, resulting in Sapp-Lynch's game winner.
Iowa narrowly out gained Nebraska in total offense, 222 yards to 218. The Barnstormers had an 11-yard advantage in the passing game, while the Danger edged them in the rushing game by seven yards. The Danger were flagged nine times for 72 yards while the Barnstormers were penalized three times for 28 yards.
Armstrong finished 12 of 21 for 141 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed seven times for 31 yards and a score. Sapp-Lynch gained 38 yards on nine carries to go along with his two rushing touchdowns, and three receptions for 37 yards. Tatum ended the night with five receptions for 53 yards and two scores. Gregory Dent, Jr., who has been converted to a defensive back from his original wide receiver position, led the team with nine tackles. Seyvon Lowry tallied a sack for the Danger defense.
Neal ended his night 16 of 30 for 157 yards with four scoring tosses and an interception; only his third of the season. He rushed 10 times for 40 yards with a touchdown. Balentine had five catches for 72 yards and a score, while Hollenbeck caught five passes for 31 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jeremy Gloston and Treyvon Williams had eight and seven tackles, respectively, for the Iowa defense.
