Welcome to the 2019 NBA Draft.
For the second time in eight seasons, the New Orleans Pelicans possess the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. They are expected to select Duke dunker Zion Williamson, who is entering the draft after a single season in college. He registers at 6'7" and 285 pounds.
Pending confirmation, they also will have the fourth pick due to a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Pelicans will also have two picks in the second round. With the first pick in the 2012 Draft, they selected Anthony Davis, who is the subject of the trade to bring the fourth pick, and other assets to the Crescent City. While Davis was the first selection, Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard would go on to win NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2012-13 season.
Following the Draft Lottery, the Memphis Grizzlies will select second and the New York Knicks will have the third pick.
The Portland Trail Blazers, featured on this site, have the 25th pick in the first round. Their second round selection, pick 56, was traded in 2016 to the Orlando Magic for the draft rights to forward Jake Layman, who is currently still on the roster. That pick was subsequently traded to the Detroit Pistons, who traded the selection to the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Blazers have featured one selection at number 25 in their history; forward Alaa Abdelnaby of Duke. He appeared in 114 games from 1990 to 1992 for the Blazers with one start, averaging 5.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Abdelnaby was traded to Milwaukee following his second season.
More notably, The Blazers made a draft day trade for the for French forward Nicolas Batum. A 6'8" project, Batum became a starter immediately. He started 428 of 481 of his games with the Blazers, averaging 11.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists. He also averaged 10.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game with the Blazers in 34 playoff games (27 starts). Batum spent the first seven seasons of his NBA career before being traded to the Charlotte Hornets prior to the 2015 NBA Draft as part of a major Trail Blazers roster overhaul.
The 2019 NBA Draft will be held Thursday, June 20 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It will be televised on ESPN
