BREAKDOWN
This game features some untested waters for both teams. The teams have never met, so the upstart expansion Sugar Skulls will battle the perennial United Bowl experienced Storm. Tucson earned its playoff berth on the last day of the regular season with its impressive 55-50 win over the Quad City Steamwheelers. The Sugar Skulls survived a fourth quarter rally attempt to put away the Steamwheelers. Mike Jones rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Sugar Skulls to the victory. Quarterback Matt Behrendt also rushed for three scores in the effort. Tucson has the distinction of being the only team to fall to the 14-0 Arizona Rattlers by less than 10 points this season; a 50-49 overtime loss at Phoenix in week 16. Sioux Falls remains among the class of the Indoor Football League. They've made it to the United Bowl the past nine seasons and won six championships from 2011 to 2016. They were defeated by the Rattlers in the 2017 United Bowl, 50-41, and topped by the Iowa Barnstormers for the championship last season, 42-38. Sugar Skulls head coach Marcus Coleman was the defensive coordinator last season for the Barnstormers. Kurtiss Riggs is in his 17th season as head coach of the Storm.
Tucson finished the regular season fourth in total offense with 3.699 yards and were third with 52.0 points per game. The Sugar Skulls were third with 158.7 passing yards per game and second in the league in rushing with 105.5 yards per game. Defensively, they allowed the seven-most point per game and 52.6 and were eighth in allowing 246.9 points per game. They allowed just 75.2 rushing yards per game which was just eight off the leading mark of the Quad City Steamwheelers. They allowed 171. 6 passing yards per game, which ranked second-to-last in the IFL. Sioux Falls was the second-highest scoring team in the league at 52.7 points per game. The Storm ranked with in total offense at 249.4 yards per game. They were fourth in the league with 154.1 passing yards per contest and also fourth with 95.2 yards on the ground. On the defensive side of the ball, the Storm's 42.1 points and 228.2 yards allowed per game both ranked fourth in the league. They allowed 158.4 passing yards (seventh) and were third in rushing yards allowed with 69.9.
The Sugar Skulls have, for most of the season, utilized both of their quarterbacks. From mid-season on, the starting job seemed to be in the hands of Jake Medlock. He was injured late in the team's second-to-last game of the season and replaced for the season finale by Matt Behrendt, would would lead them to the playoff-clinching win over the Steamwheelers. It's likely that both could see action in this playoff game. Behrendt completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 731 yards with 20 touchdowns and three interceptions on the season. He also rushed for 25.7 yards per game with 10 scores. Medlock posted a 63.5 percent completion percentage for 1,514 yards with 33 touchdowns and five picks. He rushed for 22.8 yards per game, reaching the end zone 14 times. Jones is the IFL's top rushing running back, accumulating a league-high 59.3 yards per game with 21 touchdowns, ranking him tied for fourth in that category. Jones also caught 32 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Former Rattler Shadrach Thornton could also see some carries here. Shaquon Curenton led the Sugar Skulls in receiving with 42 catches for 533 yards to go along with 13 touchdowns. Jarid "Rico" Brown had 39 catches for 466 yardss and a team-high 16 scoring grabs, and Jeremiah Harris had 27 receptions for 289 yards and six touchdowns in just six games with the team.
Linebacker Zach Allen led the team with 88 tackles, four sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and had an interception. Michah Eugene, Jr. finished the season with 81 tackles to go along with an interception and eight pass break ups. Dee Maggitt, Jr. and Cam Gaddis each had four pass break ups with four and three interceptions, respectively. Rayshawn Henderson added 2.5 sacks and an interception, while Edward Burns picked off a pair of passes. Harris has taken over the kick return duties with an 18.2 yards per return average. Maggitt may also factor in the return game with his 14.8-yard average and the team's only kickoff return touchdown of the season. The team signed Josh Gable to handle the kicking duties mid-season. He converted 50 of his 57 extra point attempts and was six of 16 on field goal tries with a long of 45 yards.
There is plenty of IFL playoff experience to go around on the Storm roster. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. led the Storm to United Bowl titles in 2015 and 2016. He finished the regular season third in passing yards per game at 156.9 and touchdowns through the air with 46. He completed 62.8 percent of his passes with 10 interceptions. Brown rushed 138 times for 544 yards and is tied with Tucson's Jones for fourth with 21 rushing touchdowns. The team signed veteran quarterback Chris Dixon for the playoffs. Dixon is a five time United Bowl Champion with the Storm and, prior, Billings Outlaws. He has won the league MVP three times and the United Bowl MVP three times. Dixon, who served as head coach of the Billings Wolves from 2015 to 2016, was inducted into the Indoor Football League Hall of Fame in 2015. On the ground, Calen Campbell will get the bulk of the carries. During the regular season he had 52 carries for 286 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Nolan Saraceni, who rushed for five touchdowns in two games, could see some carries out of the backfield as well. Brandon Sheperd is one of the IFL's better receivers, averaging an IFL fourth-best 61.7 yards per game to go along 17 touchdowns, which is tied for third. Kent Shelby finished with 42 receptions for 518 yards with 11 touchdowns, while Damian Ford had 33 catches for 552 yards and a team-high 14 scores.
T.J. Neal leads a talented Storm defense with 78 tackles to go along with 3.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Claude Davis finished fourth in the league with 5.5 sacks and tallied 10.5 tackles for loss Charles Williams had 68 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss and a trio of fumble recoveries. Rick Rumph led the team with three interceptions and eight pass break ups. Lorenzo White, Jr. added two interceptions and Malcolm Goines recorded a pair of sacks. Williams and Goines also blocked two kicks apiece. Campbell returned 30 kickoffs for 16.3-yard average with two going for touchdowns. Sheperd posted a 16.0 kickoff return average. Parker Douglass, the IFL's all-time leading scorer with 875 points, converted on 43 of 55 extra point attempts and nine of 15 field goal tries with a long of 53 yards.
