SIOUX FALLS, SD - Sometimes experience can mean everything.
That was the case tonight at the Sioux Falls Storm took one step closer to their 10th consecutive United Bowl bid with a 50-47 win over the Tucson Sugar Skulls at Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The first round playoff win over the expansion Sugar Skulls was the first-ever meeting between the teams.
The win by the Storm sets up a date with Iowa Barnstormers in the United Conference Championship Game on June 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. pacific standard time. The teams split their season series in 2019 with each team winning a game at home. In the Intense Conference Championship Game, the Nebraska Danger will visit the Arizona Rattlers on June 29 at 6 p.m. pacific standard time. The Danger rallied to defeat the Green Bay Blizzard in their first round match up, 45-40, on June 21. The Rattlers and Iowa Barnstormers had first round byes in these playoffs.
Tucson finished its Inaugural Indoor Football season at 7-7 prior to this playoff loss.
The Sugar Skulls took the opening kickoff and drove 39 yards, culminating on a 14-yard touchdown toss from Jake Medlock to Shaquon Curenton. Josh Gable's extra point try was blocked, leaving Tucson with a 6-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. The Storm responded on their opening drive, scoring on a two-yard sweep around the left side. Parker Douglass' extra point gave the Storm a 7-6 lead with 5:50 left in the opening quarter.
After Gable's 23-yard field goal went wide to the left, the Storm went back to work. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. rushed in from two yards, but Douglass' point after try was no good. The score gave Sioux Fall a one-touchdown lead with 8:32 left in the second quarter. The Sugar Skulls responded four minutes later on a 31-yard bomb from Medlock to Rico Brown. On the ensuing kickoff, Tucson's Micah Eugene, Jr. pushed the Storm kick returner out of bounds before he could return the kick out of the end zone resulting in a 14-13 lead for the Sugar Skulls.
Lorenzo Brown answered for the Storm on a five-yard run. Douglass nailed the extra point and the Storm were back on top, 20-14, at the one-minute warning. The Sugar Skulls started their next drive at their own one with under a minute to go. After driving down to the eight yard line, Medlock hit Rico Brown. Gable's extra point put Tucson up by a point with 13 seconds to go. Douglass tried to give Sioux Falls the lead as time expired in the half, but his 28-yard field goal try was wide to the right. The Sugar Skulls led 21-20 at the intermission.
The Storm received the opening kickoff of the second half and drove into Tucson territory, but were forced to settle for a 28-yard field goal from Douglass. The Sugar Skulls needed only one play to retake the lead. Lorenzo Brown's 12-yard touchdown strike to Damian Ford put the Storm back on top by two midway through the third quarter. After the Storm blocked a long Tucson field goal try, they were able to extend their lead on a one-yard plunge from Lorenzo Brown. Douglass' extra point attempt, made long due to a holding penalty, was no good. The Storm led 36-28 heading into the final quarter.
Medlock found Harris in the back of the end zone early in the fourth quarter to cut into the Storm's lead. Matt Behrendt's two-point conversion rush attempt was short, leaving the Storm with a 36-34. Lorenzo Brown's leaping six-yard run into the right side of the end zone, coupled with Douglass' point later, gave Sioux Falls a 43-34 lead with just over nine minutes to play. The Sugar Skulls responded with a 14-yard pass from Medlock to Curenton. Gable's extra point pulled them to within two points midway through the fourth quarter. The Storm used up nearly minutes of clock on their next drive, ending with a seven yard run around the left side and the Sioux Falls lead was back at nine points with 3:48 left to play.
The Sugar Skulls narrowed the margin when backup quarterback Matt Behrendt rushed in from two yards out. Behrendt's pass for the two-point conversion was knocked down by Jermain Robinson. The Storm led 50-47 at the one-minute warning. Tucson attempted an onside kick, but the Storm's Kent Shelby recovered and Sioux Falls was able to run out the clock.
Tucson gained 311 yards of total offense to 216 for Sioux Falls. The Sugar Skulls had a 164-yard edge in the passing game, while the Storm had an advantage of 69 yards on the ground. The Sugar Skulls were penalized eight times for 69 yards and the Storm were flagged three times for 19 yards.
Lorenzo Brown went 10 of 15 for 107 yards with a touchdown, and rushed for 52 yards and four more scores. Campbell finished with 35 yards off 10 carries to go along with his pair of rushing touchdowns. Ford caught four passes for 43 yards and a score. T.J. Neal had 10 tackles, while Trey Wafford had nine and Charles Williams recorded a sack for the Storm defense.
Medlock finished 22 of 25 for 273 yards with six touchdowns. Harris and Curenton each caught seven passes, for 86 and 78 yards, respectively. Rico Brown caught four balls for 57 yards. All three receivers each had two touchdown grabs apiece. Eugene tallied nine tackles and Edward Burns added seven for the Sugar Skulls.
