DES MOINES, IA - 10 straight years.
That's what it will be as the Sioux Falls Storm will make their 10th straight United Bowl appearance after taking down the defending champion Iowa Barnstormers 52-50 in the United Conference Championship game tonight at Wells Fargo Arena. The Storm will face the Arizona Rattlers, who topped the Nebraska Danger in the Intense Championship Game, 62-45. The Rattlers will host the United Bowl at Gila River Arena in Glendale on July 13 with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. pacific standard time.
Arizona beat Sioux Falls in the 2017 United Bowl. The Storm bested the Rattlers in last season's Intense Conference Championship Game, 69-68, in overtime. The Rattlers swept the season series between the teams this year, 2-0.
The only United Bowl in which the Storm did not participate was in 2009. They won six straight from 2011 to 2016. Sioux Falls was defeated by the Barnstormers in last year's United Bowl, 42-38. The Storm advanced to the conference championship after having defeated the Tucson Sugar Skulls in the first round, 50-47.
The Barnstormers finished the regular season at 12-2 and had a bye in the first round. They split the season series against the Storm with each team winning once at their home arena.
While driving in Sioux Falls territory early in the fourth quarter, Neal went down with an injury after being tripped up on a rushing play. He was replaced by the veteran wide receiver Ryan Balentine, who finished the game under center.
Iowa scored on its opening drive when Daquan Neal found Jazeric Peterson in the back of the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown strike. Nathan Criswell's extra point attempt sailed wide right leaving the Barnstormers with a 6-0 lead nearly four minutes into the game. Sioux Falls came right back, capping a nine-play drive with a one-yard plunge from Lorenzo Brown, Jr., but Parker Douglass' point after try was blocked. The Barnstormers responded with a five-yard run from Malik Brown around the right side. Criswell's extra point gave the Barnstormers a 13-6 lead with nine seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
After the Iowa defense forced the Storm to turn it over on downs, Neal hit Malik Brown for a 13-yard touchdown down the left sideline. Criswell added the point after to put the Barnstormers up 20-6 lead five minutes into the second quarter. The Storm pulled back to within a touchdown four and a half minutes later on a Lorenzo Brown Jr. five-yard strike to Kent Shelby. The Barnstormers scored on their next possession on a three yard sweep around the left side from wide receiver Ryan Balentine. Lorenzo Brown's 22-yard pass to Damond Powell Jr. pulled the Storm to within 27-19 with 1:03 left in the first half. The Barnstormers came back on a 16-yard strike from Neal to Peterson with 23 seconds remaining. Brown scored for the Storm 19 seconds later when he ran it in from two yards out. Iowa led 34-25 at the break.
Sioux Falls cut the Iowa lead to two points at the 11:54 mark of the third quarter on a three-yard rush from Lorenzo Brown, but the Barnstormers came back three and a half minutes later on Neal's four-yard run. Iowa went into the final quarter with a 41-31 lead.
The Barnstormers added a 20-yard field goal from Criswell early in the fourth. On the next offensive play, Lorenzo Brown found Damien Ford for a 39-yard score to pull the Storm to within six points. After forcing a turnover on downs, the Storm took their first lead on Lorenzo Brown's 11-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Sheperd. They followed that up with a 31-yard touchdown to Ford. With Balentine still at quarterback, the Barnstormers drove down to the Sioux Falls one yard line. They punched it in on a one-yard pass from Balentine to Connor Hollenbeck, but Balentine's pass for the two-point conversion to tie the game sailed high. The Storm recovered the onside kick and were able to run out the clock.
Iowa gained 252 yards of total offense to 224 for Sioux Falls. The Storm had a 90-yard edge in the passing game, while the Barnstormers had a 118-yard advantage in the rushing game. They Storm were penalized eight times for 50 yards and the Barnstormers were flagged four times for 46 yards. The only turnover of the game was a lost fumble by the Barnstormers.
Lorenzo Brown had an outstanding game for Sioux Falls. He went 15 of 23 for 208 yards with five touchdowns, and also rushed for three scores. Ford finished with six catches for 114 yards and a pair of touchdown grabs. Trey Wafford led the way for the Storm defense with 10 tackles and Lorenzo White added eight tackles of his own.
Prior to his injury, Neal completed 9 of 11 of his attempts for 92 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 10 times for 84 yards and a touchdown. Balentine completed four of eight throws for 19 yards and a touchdown. Peterson finished with five receptions for 58 yards and two scores. Treyvon Williams had eight tackles and Tony Valentine added a sack for the Barnstormers defense.
