Portland Forest Dragons History
1998 Season: Breathin' New Fire
Year Two
Regular Season Record: 4-10 (3rd in West Division)
Playoff Record: None
Coaches: Stan Brock (Head Coach)
The 1998 Portland Forest Dragons season was the sense of a new beginning. Armed with the slogan of "Breathin' New Fire," Portland looked to improve upon its 2-12 inaugural season in the Rose City.
The AFL saw one team fold prior to 1998, as the Anaheim Piranhas ceased operations after 4 seasons (2 in Las Vegas as the Sting, 2 in Anaheim). To offset the loss of the Piranhas, a new team in Grand Rapids, Michigan called the Grand Rapids Rampage was born. As a result, the Forest Dragons would move from the Central Division to the West Division, while the Rampage would fill in Portland's spot in the Central Division.
With a limited presence on the West Coast, Portland was one of three teams to make up the West Division, which included the Arizona Rattlers and the San Jose SaberCats.
After dropping their season opener to the Albany Firebirds, the Forest Dragons would win their next 3 games. With a 3-1 record, Portland already amassed a better record through four games than they did the previous year (1-3). However, the Dragons would go on to lose 6 straight, all but dooming their playoff hopes. Portland would finally break the streak with a win over New York, but would lose the final 3 games of the season to finish 4-10.
