3/20/20 --
Despite the Major League Soccer season being suspended due to the coronavirus, Timbers fans in the Portland area will still be able to get their fixes of Timbers matches.
The fates of each league covered by SCtoC and most major sporting events are still in limbo due to the virus, as we originally reported on March 12.
On March 13, MLS announced it was suspending the 2020 season for a month. Yesterday, the league extended that for a second month; through May 10. The Timbers already were set to miss five games (two home and three away). The extended suspension will affect four additional games. In all, the following matches are affected by the MLS decision:
Sun., March 15 - at New England Revolution
Sun., March 22 - at Los Angeles FC
Sat., March 28 - Philadelphia Union
Sat., April 4 - at Houston Dynamo
Sat., April 11 - FC Dallas
Sun., April 19 - at Atlanta United FC
Sat., April 25 - Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Sat., May 2 - Los Angeles Galaxy
Sat., May 9 - at Real Salt Lake
In the meantime, local stations KPTV and KPDX will air "classic" Timbers matches from the team's first nine seasons in the MLS on Sundays at 3 p.m. (pacific time). The specific match schedule to be broadcast was not immediately released. Fans should check their local listings for additional specifics.
The broadcasters also will air Portland Thorns matches on Saturdays at 3 p.m. The Thorns' National Women's Soccer League eighth season is still set to start on April 18 at home against the Utah Royals FC. However, league commissioner Lisa Baird said they are still "reviewing all contingency plans" and are "monitoring developing events and their potential impact."
SCtoC will continue to provide updates on the Timbers, Thorns and other teams which we cover.
